Liming your plots

I have one very rough property but was able to get it done by having a D6 come in and smooth all the roads out( needed it anyway), then I cut all the limbs out of the way down my 2 miles of road. Then paid a guy to bring his lime truck in and spread it. He was going down steep, narrow logging roads in that truck, I dont think he will do it again LOL But I did pay him extremely well. Pellet lime is ridiculous when you need alot of tonnage.

Pelletized lime or ag lime? The problem with ag lime is spreading it. It takes a special spreader.
 
First year I bit the bullet and paid for pelletized lime. Its time I do it again. Im getting soil tests this fall and liming in the spring/winter. I have recently gotten the roads fixed thanks to leasing oil rights and Im going to have them spread it anywhere they can. It should help browse and feathering areas along roads and edges of plots and help my ph for food plots.

What have people paid for someone to bring lime and spread it?
 
I use the 10 mesh lime, it's larger grannuals take a little longer to dissolve, but it's cheaper, about $15 a ton delivered. I have 10 tons delivered and dumped in a pile. I use a scoop shovel to put it in my tractor driven fertilize spreader. I can fill a 500 lb. hopper in about 5 minutes. This allows me to lime plots that can't be reached by truck, and the 10 mesh size works good in spreaders.
 
I saw on the QDMA forum where some guys were getting Ag lime dumped and then scooping it on to a utility trailer and spreading it with a leaf blower. It sounded kind of crazy but actually worked really well, and you could pull a 5x8 utility trailer with strong 4-wheeler if you had to.
 
Thanks for the advice guys! I think I'm going to spend the extra money for the pelletized form this year. I only have 2.5 acres worth of foodplots to do so it might not be too bad.

Be careful doing it this way. Me and my dad done this two years ago and when we left on our way to our lease the wind caused it to blow around a little bit and pitted the heck out of his back glass.
 
The hard way but it works. I haul up to 2500#s in the large trailer to the nearest field, whether i can get to the field or stop at the closest place adjacent to the field. i then off load it onto the 10 cuft dump cart and haul it onto the field with the 4 wheeler. this 10 cuft cart safely hauls aroung 400#s to the field and then i take the small 5# hand scoop and throw it into the air and let it drift onto the food plot. works 10X better than a shovel for getting it properly distributed. I have thrown out 40,000 #'s this way over 30 fields. It is hard work in one respect but not really that bad either. i love doing it and this is one reason our plots have come along because our ph is now close to 6.5 and better on most fields. before liming many checked out at 4.9 to 5.2 without ever being limed. Anyone can make this work if they are willing.

Most of the CO-OP's, Crop Production Service stores, etc know have fertilizer buggys that you can pull behind tractors that will spread AG Lime

Hey Bsk, there is a rock quarry in wayne county that sells a type of limestone?....called 10's...this is what i think the girl called it, not knowing if she was referring the to screened size of the material or a name for it. i saw what i thought she was speaking of out front of their place and for all intents and purposes it looked exactly like ag lime......i asked her how much per ton and she said 8.50. she said that the locals were using it for pasture purposes and i took it that is isnt exactly ag lime but close?.....do you know what this material is and is it effective for changing the PH?......i would love to use it for that cheap of a price if i can get my bang for the buck...i guess i should have inquired more...
 
Sounds like limestone ground to a mesh 10 size (will pass through a screen with 10 holes per inch). It will be slower acting, but last longer.

Yep, it's a little cheaper and spreads easily in a broadcast, or pto driven fertilize spreader. I can spread about a ton in an hour, using my tractor.

Being able to be spread with a normal broadcast seeder would be a huge benefit.
 
I have a dump trailer that used to be used as a sand hopper for a city sand truck. It will hold several tons of lime. Couple guys with shovels to throw it out then incorperate it with a drag harrow.

X2. Fairly cheap too. We picked up a pre-loaded lime buggy at the Montgomery County Co-op, towed it to property with pick-up and spread 4 tons this August with the tractor in about 30 minutes ($240 lime and buggy rental). We will never do it the hard way again.
 
my place,I cant get a truck to it,pellet is high,but I just take 10 bags at a time,keep records,you can spread A LOT over a year this way,BTW HD and lOWES PUT STUUF LIKE THIS ON SALE IN THE WINTER,i BUY A LOT ,IT SAVES A LITTLE.sorry about caps lock
 
I've found it cheaper, and easier, to have someone deliver a dumptruck load to my property, and dump it in a pile. I got 15 ton of the 10 mesh delivered for about $150.

Where is the quarry at, and do you know if they'll deliver large qty and dump? Phone number would be nice too. :)

Which quarry is it.

You would be better off IMO to get regular ag line delivered and and rent the lime spreader at the USDA office in Savannah for $150 for the weekend to spread it. I did that on 40 tons a couple years ago and the total cost was about $750.
 
Sorry to be late responding guys.
It is Floyd Trucking on savannah highway. Ask for Brandon. ther trucks can carry up to 23 tons and the cost is estimated around the 275 mark i believe......this is an awesome price. It is #10 screened.
