I've been working on getting my latest shooting house built and finished (should finish the mechanical and painting today) and a friend of mine suggested a food plot right in front of it. Even though I live on a farm, I don't have a green thumb, but I decided to try it again anyway.

Got the field disced, will do it a couple more times in the next week. So what's the best thing to plant this late in the season?

I live within 15 miles of the AL/TN border near I-65.

Thanks,

I've got 2 plots left to do that I am planting tomorrow. Oats, rye, clover, kale, turnips and radishes. Also located near the AL border.

How are you planting that?

All together? One at a time? Cultipacker or other implement and/or work to get into the ground?

I'm not a gardener, as should be plain to see. :bash:

I would disc the oats and rye in an then top sow and cultipak the small seed. Just me though...

I always had to wait until the farmer cleared his fields before I could plant. The above mentioned blend is usually what I planted and it always did alright.

Why do you think you need to disk it again?

Till to kill?

Spray it. Tilling burns up carbon (the soil's fuel) and costs you moisture.

Then sow into standing dead weeds and mow the thatch over it or lightly scratch it the sow.

Against mainstream but he's right. I can cite examples but I'll spare you.

I mowed a couple of weeks ago and new native stuff is coming up and the deer are wearing it out. I over-seeded today with wheat and clover. No disking or anything just broadcast the seed. Guaranteed it'll come up just fine if we get the rain we are supposed to. I did go heavy on wheat because turkeys are gonna eat quite a bit of that seed before it germinates.
