Shot this big male behind the house today. Took another shot to finish him, even though the first went through the shoulders. He looked stone dead till I walked up and he jumped and ran 10 feet and sat there motionless till I could grab the gun and shoot again.

It was about the size of a rabbit, got to be my biggest. I've only killed a small handful of fox squirrels. After all this time, I finally did what I've been meaning to do. The skin is pinned to a foam board so I can finally have a fox squirrel pelt on my wall. The carcass is sitting in some brine, I will probably smoke it whole.

I squirrel hunt with a dog and have killed a few fox squirrels, not many around here.

Nice I've taken most of my Squirrels in PA, we don't have the fox squirrels up there. I'm hoping to get one before I leave TN.

i dont shoot them any where but the head/neck and ribs, not really enuf meat on the ribs to mess with for frying. i have seen more the last few years than i have the last 30 years around here. did you put any thing on the skin to cure it?

Very nice, I just shot my first one recently. A friend told me they don't taste as good as the gray squirrels but I disagree. I cooked a bunch tonight and can't tell the difference other than the size of the legs!

I've got 3 in brine myself, thinking of cooking them down and adding to a stew or making squirrel noodle soup.

They do get big! Since nobody hardly ever hunts them around my place, we have a bunch of fox squirrels that I swear are getting white/grey from age. Some of the look like young groundhogs almost. I know what you mean about them not always dropping with a hit from a 22 also. My daughter's 1st squirrel was a fox and she hit it through the ribs with a 22 short. It was a long way from dead.

I'm curious too to know how you are curing the hide as I'd like to do that myself.

I used borax on the hide. Sorry for the late reply I had forgotten about this post.
