Kill Numbers

Assuming that the Game Check data is correct (perhaps a big assumption after all the glitches the system had last year) the kill numbers to date are staggering. Through Monday (first three days of the season plus juvenile weekend) - 13,323 turkeys checked in statewide.

14,978 checked in through 4/7/2020. First four days of season, plus juvenile weekend plus the few hunts that had an early start date.

I'd bet the overwhelming majority of the kills so far are 2 yr olds or less for sure. I mean I know that's kind of a loaded statement but we have more 2 yr olds and jakes this year then we've had in a decade.

I hope your statement is true for the majority of the state, but there is no way for us to know for sure. As one of my Army Commanders told me in my younger years, "son, hope is not a strategy I would rely on".

Last year regular season started 3/30 - not the juvenile. So your comparing 11 consecutive days (including 2 weekends) of grownups hunting in 2019 to 4 days plus 2 juvy days in 2020. And 2020 is still higher

I'm hunting less because my kid is home.

However, I know far more kid-less Turkey hunters. Most seem to be younger hunters without kids, older hunters with grown kids or people that were able to dodge having kids.

Either way, the woods are packed.

Honestly, I am kind of surprised with all the success folks are having because I can't buy a gobble!! Worst gobbling opening week I can remember..

We haven't had a great hatch in 5 years now on my farms... just enough to keep a few around. I shut my farms down to hunting for the next 2 weeks, but both my birds opening weekend were old. 1 1/4 and 1 3/8in spurs. Sure thats a crazy small sample size, but I am just not seeing a lot of young and stupid birds this year. A few jakes, but about average for the past several years. I hope the rest of the state is covered in birds, and I hope they migrate to my farms :).

On a bright note, my largest farm that had 20 to 30 gobblers on it back in the 90s, that subsequently declined to an unhuntably low population 4 years ago, now has 4 toms on it. We took 2 of them, and we've only killed 2 birds off that place in the past 6 years prior to this year.

I'm coming back up in 2 weeks.... and if there aren't new birds that have shifted onto my farms by then, I'm going to backup spots in counties with high kill numbers.

Most all the longbeards I've seen this year have had sharp spurs except the one I killed... [emoji2359]
