Yep. I remember seeing the birch stocked Marlins in both Walmart and Kmart, in the south at least. The fact they were significantly cheaper than most of your bolt actions is one of the things that made them sell well.
Academy sports is another one that sold them... around here anyways.
It's just a BS rumor that got started back in the 80s and 90s by gun shop owners....to justify the butt raping they were giving their customers.

I'm not sure what the various 336 designations mean. My 336CS in 35 Rem has a walnut stock but I've read that the 336W was the cheaper version after the Glenfield and various dept store branded Marlins were dropped.

I apologize for derailing this thread. If I was in the market for a lever gun, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the one above. Looks to be in amazing condition. I don't know if the "w" was offered in 35 rem, but OP might want to clarify what caliber his is.

I gotta take some credit there as well. Think I saw it's a 30-30 but it was fuzzy. It's really something the $ Marlin lever guns are going for nowadays. Mine's my favorite rifle, so I guess I'm not alone.

For some reason I'm thinking the "w" was only available in 30/30, but I could be wrong.
I did blow up (and invert) the pic with the serial number. Hard to see, but looked like 53 was first 2 digits of serial #. That would make it newer than 2000, but older than '07.
