I'm not good at aging, and the jawbone kind've amazed me because I had preconceptions of his age due to the pics, but is his neck not overwhelming looking for 3.5. I fully believe you guys are right. I'm not good at it, I just wanted to re-emphasize how big I thought his neck was. haha. Huge, or maybe I just haven't seen one in a while.

Neck was 24" circumference at base of head, deer field dressed at 170#. Seeing him in the field and then dead I would never put 3.5 on him. He must of had a really good toothbrush and only ate super soft foods...? LOL! Maybe I need to look at other side, he may have just chewed on one side...

I think that deer's teeth are an anomaly. The heavy mass, really large body weight, huge neck, and funky rack are all indications of an old deer (however rack indicates injury). Really old. The teeth don't paint that picture though. However, if a tooth were sent off, there is no way in haties I put money on 3.5. He is 5.5+. I agree teeth don't look it.

I am planning to send the teeth off to have them analyzed through forensics. Anyone ever done this before?

I killed a 2.5 that dressed 150 so no problem for that deer to be only 3.5. very fat deer

The teeth look 4 to me. The cusp on the last molar has a slight downward slope. Not much but suggests to me he's probably a younger 4.5.

3.5 dentine on the number 4 tooth must be wider then the enamel
4.5 dentine on the number 5 tooth has to be wider then the enamel

Hard call ..I still say 3.5 by the teeth ..the deer may well be older????

I don't pay much attention to toothwear.I have killed 2 that I knew was 5 1/2,but the jawbone showed 3 1/2.had pics of them both their whole life.one had a chunk out of his left ear,one had a white spot between his eyes.I am going to start sending a few jawbones off for ageing.

Not surprising.

Good idea for deer you suspect are 4.5+. Matson's Lab or Deer Age can perform cementum annuli aging.
