Took a bow shot at this guy 2 wks ago and shot too low at 44 yards. Saw him next morning before legal time and again tonight but he was limping really bad. Took him out of his misery with an easy 15 yard bow shot. Who knows what happened to him....looked painful.

EHD survivor?
I thought it was possible, but he wasnt like this 2 wks ago. He walked fine then, as well as the next day. It looks fairly fresh but who knows. I know when I saw him tonight the only thing I wanted to do was put him down. It was bad. He was alert and all, just couldn't walk well at all. Maybe someone shot his foot 🤷‍♂️

Congrats on the kill, but it wasn't a mercy kill. That buck would have healed up just fine and lived.

My daughter killed a 150in buck 10 years ago that had his entire front foot amputated off at the ankle. Bare bone exposed, but he was tending a doe when she killed him and he was healthy as could be.

I would expect hoof hung up in a fence crossing, and working it loose degloved half his hoof.

I'd be shocked if he was able to rid the yotes but I guess its possible. I've seen some crazy stuff happen to deer and they survive and know it can happen.

Congratulations on the kill brother , looked as if he'd bern battling some . Pretty nice buck .

Between infection and coyotes I have no idea if he would have lived or not?
But now you know hes not out there miserable limping around. Congrats on a nice buck.

Think you guys have seen this. Don't recall if you determined the supposed cause?

Yes we have had this issue. I haven't necessarily seen it with a missing hoof but the swollen ankle above the hoof indicates foot rot. I had TWRA look into it last year and their chief biologist agreed it was hoof rot. We are seeing it again this year. It has been a tough issue to deal with because it kills most of the deer it infects.

You did right by putting the deer down. They will get to where they hold their leg up without it even touching the ground, which indicates how excruciating the pain is for them. I have only seen one deer survive for an extended period of time with this issue, but he struggled for over a year badly. It is mostly fatal in months on deer I have observed.
