The Spider bull is down and scores 500 4/8 shattering the old world record.
Its on the Mossback website. Denny Austad was the hunter who shot him.

Go to Monstermuleys and click on forums then go to the elk section
or go to Mossback.com

The man who paid $170,000 for the Governors tag killed him.

Wow.
First I have ever heard of this. Sounds like they were definately on that ole bulls butt for a while.

I can see why he missed him at 190 yards last week. I think I would have discharged my rifle prematurely after seeing that headgear.

Pretty much a slam-dunk new world record.

WOW!!!Was this a free range Elk?
Yes, he was in the Monroe unit of Utah. He had been watched all summer long by the Mossback gang. The Governors tag holder is allowed to hunt any unit any where in the state with the weapon of their choice. He was basically a hired gun to kill this elk.

i was told he has spent 300,000 for that bull. and he will get another auction tag in january for another bull. he owns a oil company in new mexico

Mr. Austad spends more money on premium tags than Wall St. has at the present time. He spent over $60k for a premium antelope tag in Az and killed a giant pronghorn. I have read where he started his own shipping business and then sold it for quite a large sum of money and now is in some sort of real estate business. Either way, he has a disposable income that I cannot fathom. He puts alot of much needed money into state wildlife agencies coffers and I respect him for that.

Nice bull , but I hope hunting never becomes a sport for just the rich who can just buy a trophy animal . It's good that he donates some of his earnings to the state game agencies though .

Thing is, this bull was killed on PUBLIC LAND!!! There were around 90 other tagholders out there, most of whom are regular folk who had a chance at this bull as well over the past few weeks... That's right, while one fellow spent $170,000 for just an OPPORTUNITY at this bull, there were others out there who only spent resident or nonresident elk tags fees for the same opportunity. Now, granted, Mr Austead had an advantage of having 6 or 8 guides dedicated to this bull that he spent some additional cash on that the regular folks didn't have. But my point is in this instance, it wasn't all about the money.

I have seen a couple of still pics from a video camera where this bull is walking within feet of a camper while he was in velvet. How he made it as long as he did still baffles me. He didn't get that big in just one year.

I agree with you mega in that it wasn't all about the money. But it sure did help in Spidey going to the great taxidermist in the sky.
