Almost all the buck rubs I seen before were vertical scrapes in the bark. The vast majority of these marks are horizontal and low to the ground. This tree is roughly 14 inches in diameter. There are other trees marked like this on my property but all are on smaller trees.
What say you experts?

A tiny creek is close by, but absolutely no signs of beavers. I lived here for 6 years.

Looks like a beaver to me. Do you have any trails that you think are really good deer trails nearby, except they are really smooth? That's a sign, as beavers drag their tails and it makes the path smooth.

My gut tells me it's a beaver as well. But there are no chips from the tree on the ground, and just that mark on one side of the tree. No trails around either. About two weeks ago we had heavy rains that washed out the creek causing it to flood the banks. No signs of damns or trees that have actually been felled.

It's a beaver. No chips on the ground because it probably ate all the bark it chewed off. You can see the pairs of teeth marks. I hunt around water a lot so I see this kind of beaver sign all the time. They will cut down a whole tree that size just cause they feel like it.
