of your 2 choices i would get the leupold
Ditto.

But just to stick with either Leupold or Nikon, I'd rather put that money in a VX-III or a Nikon Monarch than either of those two choices. Just my opinion, but I believe most of the "muzzleloader" scopes are mainly a gimmick to sell more scopes and/or lower quality glass at a higher price than it would otherwise command.

If you can't go above that price range, I'd give consideration to buying a used scope with better glass, such as the Leupold VX-III or Nikon Monarch (not to mention several others such as Zeiss Conquest, Burris Signature, etc.).

I will say I think a good muzzle-loading reticle is very nice to have considering the severe drop within effective killing range. The swaro comes with a ballistics chart showing now different loads will perform with the reticle.

Ok,

I have time and the margines can be adjusted(cost wise) I am not going for one of the high dollar units like Swarovski, Zeiss, etc. I am doing a little more shopping around in the Leupold and Nikon arena's though.

I will not do Bushnell or Tasco and I will never own another Burris!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to everone who has posted so far for the info.

Best of luck in your search. For the last 5 years I've had a 3-9x40 Nikon Monarch UCC on my Omega...that's the same as the Nikon Primos posted above. It is a very decent scope. But I wanted a BDC reticle and I did not want to sacrifice any glass quality.

I feel like there are a lot of gaps in the market regarding what's offered for Muzzleloading scopes. I don't know the reason, but all manufactors offering ML reticles...except swaro...seem to put them on their bottom end glass.

To me, the ideal ML scope would be a bushnell 4200 with the BDC 200 reticle...but they don't offer that.

I've been thru that whole getting a silver scope to put on a stainless rifle. It isn't worth it. I think matte looks better on stainless because you are never going to find a scope that matches the rifle perfectly. It will always be a little off. The other thing is that you don't have the variety of scopes to choose from. No manufacturer makes all of their scopes in silver. The only real advantage that I see is that sometimes you can get the silver scope for less than the same scope in matte because the dealer can't get rid of it.

Ok, let me rephrase this..............I am not looking for a SS scope, but one in silver finish.

The gun is a matte SS finish as well.

For this particular gun, I want a silver scope. I was more curious about input/opinions on manufactures, quality, etc of the scopes listed, not so much the color.

Sorry if that part was misleading.

I don't think that anyone makes and actual stainless scope. My point was that you are limiting yourself because not all manufacturers make all of their scopes in silver. For instance, the Team Primos that I mentioned above. I don't know that you can get that in silver but its a better scope than both of the ones that you originally listed and you can get them for $199 right now. In other words, you may be choosing color of quality. Thats all I'm saying.

Can someone tell me a better scope for $250 than a VX-II?

Used VX-II's can be had for $250 - all day long. I sold a mint 3x9x40 matte VX-II to a member here for $175.

Don't regret that sale in the least, but I loved that scope.

The guy you sold it to got a great deal. The Nikon Team Primos is going for $199 right now brand new. I guess they are on clearance. They are clearer and brighter than a VXII. The Nikon Monarch UCC is clearer and brighter also and it can be had for probably $50 less as well. I have seen the Nikon Monarchs go in that price range on ebay. I would say a Sightron SII is at least as good as a VXII and they can be had in that price range new. If you are talking used, there is no telling what kind of deal you can get. You just have to have the money and be on top of it.

I am hunting the Ebay postings now...........missed a NIB Leupold vx2 3-9 x 40 by $5 last night. Sold for $275.00

I fell asleep and missed any final bidding last night.

They have a 3.5x10x50 silver for $225.00 vx2, I am trying to stay away from the bigger lens if possible, but may take this deal.

The 3.5x10x50 is not a VX-2. VX-2 series are whole numbers (ie 3x9x40, 2x7, 4x12, etc). The 3.5x10 should be one of the Vari-X 111, VX-iii, or VX-3 models.

I'm not a fan of 50mm objectives either.

Check out 24hourcampfire classifieds. Lots of good deals on scopes lately-

You are correct, my mistake........it is a vx3

I will see what is on the campfire site tonight. Thanks

Are you sure its not a vari-xIII and not a vxIII or did you go up in your price range? Vari-xIII 3.5-10x50 go for between $300 and $350 where as VXIII 3.5-10x50 go for between $550 and $600. If you are willing to go $550 to $600, then look at the Zeiss Conquest, used Kahles, Meopta, and Sightron SIII. Of course, I don't know if the Kahles, Meopta or the SIII come in silver. A vari-xIII is the same as a VXII. Leupold likes to confuse people. A vari-XII is the same as a rifleman.

The scope I linked above is still available-

VX-II silver 3x9x40 for $245 shipped (was $255 shipped)

It it listed as a VXIII, on ebay, Supposedly, it was mounted on a rifle then the owner sold the rifle, but the buyer didn't want the scope or some crap. So, owner is selling scope seperately.

Is it sitting at $255 right now and has 4d 22h left?

You have to be careful buying luepolds off of ebay because some guys will call a vari-xIII a vxIII. I have seen allot of vari-xII's called vxII's on ebay. If I am looking at the right one, he says its a Vari-xIII but then he says they go for $550 at cabelas and Basspro. A vxIII goes for $550 at cabelas and basspro. There are actually several Vari-xIII's on ebay right now with a buy it now price of around $500 hoping some poor idot will buy it thinking they are getting a vxIII when in reality they are really getting an old vxII. Leupold really screwed up when they renamed the line. They should have left them the same and just called the new vxIII the vari-xIV or something.

There is a silver vari-xIII 3.5-10x40 sitting our there right now with 4 days left and its at a good price right now. 2 black ones just went for around $280 each just a little while ago.

2 that I don't have to compete with.

Leupold's have a LT warranty. Buy one send it back for a check up and you will basically have a NEW scope...

Unless unavailable due to a new model, I'll bet I own/owned/bought/sold 10-15 Leupys.

Never a problem.

Ok,

After a lot of looking around and decision making........... I purchased a "NEW" from a dealer, Nikon Buckmaster 3-9 x 40 in silver finish.

I got what I feel was a good deal and am happy with my decision. I have a 3-9 x 40 Prostaff on my Omega and like that very much and have had zero problems with it.

I will post pics of the set up after mounts and scope arrive and I install them.

Thank you to everyone for there input and suggestions, they were appreciated.

I would never buy a used scope over the internet except from a reputable dealer.
ditto
why

leupolds and zeiss have a great warranty

I can kind of understand having that opinion with the luepolds because of the counterfeit Mark 4's that are out there and the confusion with the Vari-X line vs the VX line. I have also heard of counterfeits of some of the other manufacturers, even bushnells. That all being said, it won't keep me from buying off of ebay.

By the way FDX, congradulations on your new scope. I don't think you will be disappointed. I had a 4.5-14 buckmaster which I thought was a great scope. I got rid of it to get a lower power scope so I upgraded to a monarch gold 2.5-10.

There is no way I could wait. I have had to wait months on back orders. Cancel the back order and find them or something good enough locally and pay the extra money.
