Im looking for 2 or 3 who would be interested in hunting the 2nd (4 day) shotgun hunt in Ill this yr? Private farm with house available on property to stay in for marginal fee. Pike co. farm, with plenty of timber as well. Serious inquires only please.
PM me.

Side note, whoever goes this yr has first choice for next yr, etc as well. Once your in you have first choice for the next yr on same hunt.

Man, if I was going to be back stateside I would jump all over the opportunity.

If you have any openings for next year count me in!

Drop would love to have you, just depends on who/what happens this yr? Rare opportunity and doesn't come open very often as most keep it for years once in.

PM's answered so far and cost is $1500 per person. If you rent the farm you will be only ones hunting it that week and you have first choice next yr.

how many people can hunt their, and is that $1500 a week or a year. May be a dumb question but I might be interested. Thanks

Steve I'm being told they are still available over the counter but have not called myself. Just trying to help a friend fill this hunt as it just came available last minute.

I saw the news release from IL DNR that they had some firearms permits for sale after the drawings. It's surprising that some were for Pike. Pretty good sign that the economy still isn't that great.

Good luck on the hunt!

I agree Steve not too many yrs ago this would never have happened as permits were gone in the drawing for all hunts.

While this MAY be a reflection of the economy, not necessarily.

It MAY be a reflection of several other factors more than the economy. Among those factors is the availability of "acceptably good" deer hunting which may be more readily available closer to the homes of many former non-resident Illinois deer hunters. Even when the economy is great, that doesn't mean people will necessarily choose to spend more than necessary, or drive greater distances than necessary.

By no means am I suggesting the quality of the deer hunting in Illinois is not only great, but about as good as it gets, but to what extent has it changed compared to the quality of the deer hunting in the many states surrounding Illinois?

I'm inclined to think those unsold tags in Illinois may have more to do with the law of supply & demand than our national economy. May also have to do with other dynamics such as an aging group tiring of a long drive, shifting values regarding what they seek in their hunting, perhaps even less interest in hunting period. But then, that is the very essence of "supply & demand".

Gas is cheap now, but that doesn't make me want to drive farther. Meanwhile, the quality of the deer hunting in both TN & KY competes better with Illinois now than has been the case at any point in the recent past, and can be had with fewer hoops to jump and less liabilities. Traveling in Illinois is a liability unmatched by any state that borders Illinois. Maybe more people are realizing it, and either traveling more to other states or simply doing more of their hunting in their home states.

And while most of us prefer larger antlers over smaller antlers, it would also be my opinion that the number of hunters exclusively and aggressively pursuing the largest antlered bucks is trending downward.

I think Ruger may have provided much of the answer when he posted the below on another thread:

I have been deer hunting for over 30 years. There have been countless Friday nights spent tossing and turning waiting on opening day of bow season.

Deer season has been open for over a month in KY and has been open several weeks in TN.
I haven't even gone yet.

Body has a couple issues that makes mobility an issue and comfort is something that apparently is a thing of the past. I had to pass my bow down to my son because I can't pull it anymore. Tried the crossbow thing, not for me. Got a bow to use but I don't have the fire.

As with all young men, my son's fire to deer hunt is but a smolder right now. He has a great girlfriend and of course he spends alot of time with her and away from me and hunting and fishing. His fire for hunting is there but it is consumed by duck hunting and the thoughts of upcoming duck season.

My sole happiness and mostly my sole purpose for deer hunting over the last 11 or 12 years has been to teach my son woodsmanship and share in his happiness, success and alas failures in the woods. Without that to push me, I have nothing left to make me go.

Still love to fish and have been doing more and more of it.
I can still do that without TOO much pain and I don't pay for it for days afterwards.

Wes you may be right but every tag was gone in il before the drawing was over before the economy tanked, yet the permits haven't sold out a single time since.

I have no doubt a downturn in the economy was a factor. Just saying it MAY not be as big of a factor as it is so often credited (not just for Ill permits, but lots of things).

IMO, the overall economy has been steadily (but very slowly) improving over the past 2 to 3 years. Economic slowdowns that happened in 2008-2010 may have greatly impacted those tag sales, and caused many hunters to "take a look" at hunting some different states, which they may have found such acceptable alternatives that they MAY not come back to Illinois no matter how good the economy gets.

Winchester is a top notch guy to deal with. Good luck to all who capitalize on this opportunity. I hope y'all have some luck and please post the pics if so. :)
