Like most of you..I have had at one time or another almost every center fire caliber there is.. but somehow the .308 has eluded me.. after watching a couple of army sniper shows, having a buddy tell me he shoots 2 liter bottles a 400 yards all the time with his.. I decided I had to have one.. after a year of looking..I was at walmart one day and there she sat.. Ruger American rifle..308.. I had to have it.. browsed the scopes.. just what i wanted.. Nikon Prostaff BDC.. bullet drop compensator!! a set of rings, a strap, and a box of bullets and I was set.. zeroed her at 100 yards.. checked the dope on the nikon website.. the 4 little circles in my scope and my bullet combination were almost, 200,300,400 and 500 yards on the dot.. I got in the stand the other morning, set by a old logging road.. ready to air it out.. probably a hour in the hunt here come 2 deer charging down the road.. when they finally stopped I put the crosshairs on the first ones head.. kaboom.. graveyard dead.. shucked the second shell in.. kaboom.. right at the base of the scull.. grave yard dead.. I am so tickled WITH my LONG RANGE gun.. that morning my first shot was at 50 FEET.. THE SECOND AT 20 FEET.......LOL..

That is too funny.

I'm hunting With a 26" Remington 700 with a heavy barrel, Bell & Carlson Stock, Weaver 3-15x50 EMDR scope and such. Gun weighs 14 lbs and when I get good enough will easily shoot to 1000 yards. My furthest kill so far is 60 yards. :-)

I can tell you what happens when it's in the hands of someone who doesn't shoot freehanded. I spend three hours looking for a deer with half a leg missing. They are great guns, but they do a lot of damage and if you miss slightly the end result can be a lost and wounded deer.

What power was the setting you got those distances at? I used the same program and scope combo and depending on magnification, distances varied. I had to print off a chart and tape it to my stock so I didn't get confused.

I keep it on 3.. (for cases like this) I zeroed it on 9 as per instructions.. the 100 yard zero doesnt change with the power settings..but the 2,3,4,and 500 yards circles will change with the power setting, if you plan on shooting farther than 100 yards you have to have the scope set on 9 according to the booklet

Pressfit How do you like your ruger american? Does it kick hard being a light gun? It seemed to cycle smoothly at the store

I really like.. I'd buy another one tomorrow if mine got gone.. It fits good and doesnt kick at all.. my 6mm has more felt recoil than this does..

Just wondering, have any of you all shot the distances with the guns you all are talking about to see how they hit ? Just wondering how accurate the chart was ?

Long story short the rookie I am teaching to hunt shot the leg off a deer with his 308 after missing because he doesn't practice no rest shots. Basically in the hands of the unexperienced, just a plain bad idea

Not to hijack pressfits post but it could have been any cal gun

Most deer hunters are not that good of shots because we rarely practice shooting. A few shoot some groups off sandbags to sight their guns in just before season each year. Many don't even do that. Many don't even know that you are supposed to sight their guns in.

I'm in the 1st group. I sight in on sand bags then hunt nowadays. My shooting shows it too. :( I used to shoot silhouettes one day every week which of course is all fired offhand and believe me, I could tell a big difference. The shots you typically make on deer felt ridiculously easy then. When guys who shot only when they hunted would come shoot a silhouette match with us, they would hit maybe 10 out of 40 shots.

Lesson to be learned is to stand up and do some shooting offhand before deer season. A good quality 22 bolt action is a great way to do this without going broke too.

I have not..I feel confident up to 250 yards(which is a long shot for me) with it from everything I have read and read and read.. with out actually trying them.. we are planning a trip out west next year and I will have shot the distances's before then..

That would be a good idea. I zero mine in with the ballistic charts, no bdc scope, but bullet ballistics for my 270,. I sighted it in at a 100 yrd target, for what the ballistics said. I was going out west Mule deer hunting. I had it to where it was suppose to be dead on at 300 yrds. I then shot it at 300 yrds about 10 times. It was pretty much on the money to. Just had to see, so I had confidence out to that range. I did end up shooting 3 deer, the futherest 310 yrds, and the closest around 250. Good luck on your trip.

I routinely shoot my .308 out to 200 yards and can keep a .5-.75 moa group fairly regularly. Unfortunately I have not had access to somewhere I can stretch it further. Desperately hope to sometime soon.

Way over gunned!Should have used a shotgun.

Wait a minute.Thats already been discussed here.
Better not bring it up again.

Congrats great shooting!
