There aren't a lot of crappie in the Harpeth river in the Franklin area which is where I do most of my fishing. Never caught one in my 7 and a half years of fishing.

Saw a dead crappie on the shore of a small lake on a city park. Fishing is allowed there. The lake was flooded back in may since it's right next to the river. I don't know if the fish came from the flood or was stocked, or how many crappie are in the lake. But there is little to no cover on the lake.

What should I use to try and catch one or two? Could I sink a bush a couple days before so there is cover to fish? Use one of those white crappie jigs? Any suggestions appreciated...I don't need to get into crappie fishing hardcore, I just want to see if I can catch one or two.

Thanks, I don't have more than a 7 ft rod but I will do what I can, and hope nobody minds me putting a bush in a pond in a city park. it's a big open park that used to be a horse farm. Mainly dog walkers use the park. I will pick up some jigs and minnows are easy to catch in any creek so I might try that as well.

get ya some live shiners and hook them under the bottom jaw out through the top of head and pitch in the water without any weight on the line. Let them swim around. Not only can you catch a few crappie that way you can catch other fish too !

Yeah there are a few bass I think in there and some carp....gonna bring out the corn and white bread when it gets warm. I love carp.

Simms emailedme three days ago and said he lacked two of having a limit. I wonder if he has them yet? And when did they put a limit on them?

Sounds to me like an excellent way to get a ticket. I don't think I would try putting a bush in a city park. I am pretty sure it is against the law and judge may not be a fisherman.

hmm thanks for the advice. The lake is catch and release anyway...I don't think it'd be worth it sinking a bush just to catch a fish that I won't be able to taste. And it's right across the river from the sewage plant and has a "recycled water" sign so I really don't want to eat any fish from there  so I will see if I can find another place to try for crappie. Never tasted them, but everybody here seems to love em so I got try them.

Catman,
I was reading what DBLAARCHERY wrote about you in the Vous thread. He was talking about how you want to learn and we should teach you "our ways". It reminded me of this thread. I have an offer. If you will drive to Parsons on a Thursday or Friday in April (I will let you know when I am catching them well), I will take you crappie fishing in my boat. All you need to provide is transportation and whatever you eat. I will have everything else. After we fish I will show you how to fillet them if you don't know how. You can take the fillets home with you to cook and try out. You will love them. Let me know if you are interested.

Thats a nice offer, thanks for helping a young fella out.

Thanks a bunch man, I will let you know if I can, how far is Parsons from Williamson? Hopefully gas prices won't be too bad at the time...I will already be spending more than usual to drive 45-50 minutes to my hunting spots in Maury. I'd love to have a good shot at some crappie. I'd owe you something though...

Thanks again. Will see how I am doing with money at the time as far as gas prices go. If I go thursday or friday I'd have to skip classes which is possible if we have no exams coming up. I have work at 5pm too so I'd have to either be home before then (preferably) or take off work.
