Today was day 3 of consecutive hunting days using my canoe. I had been trying remote places that I had previous knowledge of but hadn't hunted this year. Todays weather was warmer, supposed to rain, and I was a little burned out. Rain wasn't coming till midday so, my little optimism crept in a bit yesterday evening.
December had been a really hard month for me deer hunting. I had not been finding deer in their normal spots. When I did find them, I got busted twice. I also had a shot at a buck and had a bullet misfire. By the time I reloaded another bullet he had passed the last window and didn't come back.
Needless to say, I was a down about all of it, but I forced myself to go today anyway. Attitude is everything and I had made peace with it, that I was going to make the best of whatever came.
Went into an area I had previous experience with. Found a scrape fairly early on, not smoking hot, but had a deer track in it. I climbed a tree and hunted there from daybreak till 7:30. I had another spot in mind.
I had picked out another area that I had seen big tracks and old rubs in from 3 years ago. As I was walking and stalking I was dragging a drag rag. I kept refreshing it with some urine. I saw tracks looking very fresh and found another scrape. This one was smoking hot. I looked over and saw two fresh rubs. I wanted to keep going but couldn't walk past the fresh sign.
I slung my drag rag over a head high limb and I climbed up a nearby tree and got reset to give it a few hours. I didn't have to wait very long at all, her she comes.
I flicked safety off and made the shot. Watched her fall and heard him grunting and when he did a semi circle I shot him too. Watched him drop too. Outstanding!
I climbed down and they fell within 25 yards of each other. I went and checked them out, and was just enjoying the moment. I pulled them together and cleaned them up and made a video with them and gave All praise and glory to God.
His tarsals were stained jet black his neck was swollen, and I'm fairly certain he was rutted up with that doe or harassing her at least.
Then the work. I took my stand and rifle back to canoe and got my rollup sled and returned to work on the buck. I think it's always best to get the heavier deer first. Got em both loaded and rode out. Such a blessed day!
