How weird is this?

I was walking across a 15 acre field on our place (in Virginia) after my hunt this morning, when I almost stepped on a little pile of shelled corn out in the middle of the field. All of 10 kernels. I have no idea how it got there. The farmer cut it 6 weeks ago. Only other person who should have been out there since then is a logger looking to set up a loading deck 2 weeks ago. Seems it would have been eaten by something long since then.

It is illegal to bait or feed deer this time of year. My first thought was somebody is trying set me up, and spilled some on the way to the bait. But that seems a little far fetched. I have not idea how ten kernels of dry corn got into a neat pile in the middle of my field. Nearest corn is about 1 mile away. No sign of the cobb or anything.

Thoughts on this?

It's not illegal to feed them. It's illegal to hunt over it. I would say a coon did it.

If it was a big concern you should have just picked it up and slung it across the field. They can't prove anything against you for scattered kernels in a cut cornfield. Could be a poacher putting out just enough to attract deer but not to leave evidence.
