I walked up on a bone pile while doing a little shed hunting. This is beyond the range of my aging abilities.... Have a guess because its a guessing game. All 3 molars dished out

Think she died of old age?

who knows... ive aged deer up to 7.5 that weren't that worn. Its all a guessing game at this point.

Im sure exposure has made them look worse but shes and old lady regardless!
only thing exposure does is lightens the color of the dentine. Her 1st molars are worn completely flat and smooth and are almost gone down to the bone. It makes the jaws from my 5 1/2 year old look like a yearling.

It's an old doe, that's all I can tell you. But great find! I've tried to go shed hunting here where I live, and have NEVER found a one
gotta be where the bucks are I guess... some places are covered in deer sign but no sheds, others have lots of sheds. Keep looking and don't look for a whole antler, just look for a tine or part of a beam hidden by vegetation.

Exactly my point, the bleached white color makes it look even worse than it really is, which is an old doe no doubt.

come on y'all she has to be at least 56. Look at how worn down those teeth are

Those teeth are just worn down because she chewed on her pipe all the time. She was really very young, but she had a rough life making her look much older. I am betting the meth didn't help much either, it really wears on the teeth!

dang it sucks when you have a good deer go downhill and become a meth head

If you can get the jaw to me and let me have a few of the teeth I can send it in to Matsons for cementum annuli testing. I don't think I've ever seen any jaw as worn as that.

can you age the cementum off teeth from the top (skull)? I have all 8 incisors intact and will glue the whole jawbone together including the incisors so I don't want to spare any lower teeth. I would love to see a more accurate result on the deer's age. Can the cementum layers still be seen and read accurately after the deer has rotted away to the bone?

What a nice offer. Do we have the best WROs or what?
BGG is a great guy as are many of the TWRA people.

I'll need to check with Matsons to see what teeth they would need. You may have to remind me because I'm pretty busy next week with numerous meetings, Commission, and NWTF.
