Met with the farmer this evening and he said they have decided to take the loss on beans this year and will not be planting crops again on that field. They instead will be planting cereal grains for hay, starting with some type of rye this fall. He said he expects the deer to be just as thick as they are on the beans, so he still wants me in there hunting, and still wants the herd thinned as much as possible. He feels as if the deer are competing with his cattle. He raises angus breeding stock, some pretty high level cows as I understand it.

Anyway, that relieves the stress of thinking he might expect me to save his beans, and I still have a place to hunt. Now I just gotta figure out how many to cull.

Kill every one you possibly can. If your density is that high it'll take several trips, even 3 at a time to start making a difference.

Reassure him that the deer aren't competing with the cattle for the rest of his forage. He most likely has fescue in his pastures, and deer will not eat fescue because they cannot digest it. They will hit the winter field of wheat and rye, but will likely not graze it to the point where it does not produce spring hay.

Kill as many as you can and donate to Hunters for the Hungry. Some processors get grants to cover the processing cost so you don't have to pay.

Once you start hunting and spooning and killing it won't take long for them to go nocturnal. Kill as many as you can opening day and earl season.
I probably wouldn't bow hunt the place, it's ineffective in population management for the most part and will only make them more spooky come rifle season.

Update! :party: I found the bucks. There's a couple bachelor groups accessing a hidden corner of the field right at dark every night. Only two of the bucks are note worthy and I only got one pic with both of them in it. According to the camera they only access via one trail, always right before dark, and they leave the way they came right before daylight. Since the 9th I got 3002 pics on the camera watching where they cross the fence.
