Help Please

Is there some was to look up the year a gun was made I have found a Marlin with serial number F 229** it is only a 5 digit number but I am not sure what to "F" stands for. I also know that the early Marlins are not as sought after as the Winchester but can be worth some mone, and i think this one is priced right.
