While hunting this past weekend here in Mississippi, I had 15 or so deer come out 30 minutes before dark in a foodplot. A 2.5 y/o buck, a 1.5 y/o buck, and 5 button fawns were the males; there were also another 3 does and 3 or 4 female fawns in the field.
The 2.5 y/o buck ruled the plot, posturing and generally being a bully toward the other male deer. He'd lip curl after sampling where the does had urinated, but none of them were in heat.
BUT... one of the buttons went to where one of the does had peed, got down on his front knees, and literally rolled his head in the pee for over 5 minutes. Reminded me of how dogs will roll in dead, stinky stuff. After he finished, he stood back up, licked the dirt off his knees, and went back to feeding. I'm chalking it up to first surge of testosterone, and him not knowing what to do...
Anyone ever see anything like this? Was def my first time.
