Has anyone witnessed this unusual deer behavior?

While hunting this past weekend here in Mississippi, I had 15 or so deer come out 30 minutes before dark in a foodplot. A 2.5 y/o buck, a 1.5 y/o buck, and 5 button fawns were the males; there were also another 3 does and 3 or 4 female fawns in the field.

The 2.5 y/o buck ruled the plot, posturing and generally being a bully toward the other male deer. He'd lip curl after sampling where the does had urinated, but none of them were in heat.

BUT... one of the buttons went to where one of the does had peed, got down on his front knees, and literally rolled his head in the pee for over 5 minutes. Reminded me of how dogs will roll in dead, stinky stuff. After he finished, he stood back up, licked the dirt off his knees, and went back to feeding. I'm chalking it up to first surge of testosterone, and him not knowing what to do...

Anyone ever see anything like this? Was def my first time.

i've seen them lip curl, but never roll their heads in it ! probably trying to do the best he can without antlers, after watching his antlered friends dig the dirt with their antlers :D

^^^LOL @ GRIT, that was classic! :tu:

Jon - never seen anything like what you described, but sounds like another awesome and eventful, albeit strange, day in the woods. I'll take a day like that where I see a "first" over a 25 deer sighting hunt. I like learning stuff in the woods, and that would definitely be a first for me on buck fawn behavior. :)

Never seen or heard of that before. Now I have to go find something to clean my computer screen. Thanks GRIT.

Never heard of a button acting like that.

However, I did see a button buck licking another button buck all over the side of his head and neck this year. Never have seen one do that before. It was pre-rut in a clover plot one morning.

Not seen anything like that but I have seen a mature buck drop down on his knees with his neck stretched out over the lip of a straight up and down embankment checking the wind that was pushed straight up into the air because of that terrain.

Cool encounter, never saw a button do that but have saw them do some silly stuff, def dumbest deer in the woods once Momma runs them off.

Two years ago, I watched a little 4 point lick the face of a big 6 point for probably 15 minutes. This was immediately after they had soft sparred for a few minutes. The licking seems really weird to me. The best part of the day, just after the licking session, the Big 6 Point walked right to my stand and I killed him with an arrow.
