Hammer? Sledgehammer? Pestle!

Found this last week on the French Broad River near Kodak. Any idea what it could be? Looks as though it could have had a handle in the middle groove between the two flat ends. Weighs one pound tweve ounces and appears to be some type of granite. Each flat side is very smooth.
