Proud new owner of an H&R 20 Gauge Slugger. Any advice on ammo and sighting in techniques? I put a 2.5X7 Nikon Prostaff Shotgun scope on it and was told that it was boresighted. Thanks guys.

Don't try to sight it in at 100 yds. Sight it in 2 inches high at 50 yds. I would get it grouping on paper with cheap slugs and then move on to more expensive slugs. Once you have a good group, move back to 100 yds and see how it groups.

You need to try a variety of slugs in different weights and speeds to find out which one it likes best. Some slugs to try would be remington accutips, remington buckhammers, hornady sst's, lightfield hybrids, and federal barnes expanders. If you got the money, buy one box of each of at least 3 different weights and speeds. You will be glad you did because some slugs will shoot 6 inch groups and some will all be in a single hole and it sure would suck if you only bought one brand and it was the slugs that shot a 6 inch group.

Great, thanks for the advice. I was thinking the same thing with cheap slugs at first and at 50 yards before taking it out any further.

It is obviously a rifled barrel. Is there any complications with shooting rifled slugs throug it?

My H & R 20 gauge Ultra Slug Hunter loves the Remington Copper Solids.
Mine too, They are very accurate out of my slug hunter BUT I don't like loosing deer or no blood trail. I lost one deer that I know I hit dead in the front shoulder. Could only find one blood spot where the deer fell and got up. I had two other deer that had NO BLOOD trail. I found them because they only went 50 to 75 yrds and I watched where they ran. All blood was in the deer. Never found a drop of blood on the ground. The copper solids punch a small hole in and the same coming out. I went back to Rem. buckhammers. They ain't as pretty, shoot almost 3" group at 100 yrds and pound the snot out of the deer. Good enough for me till I find something better.

That's why I don't take shoulder shots. I only take lung shots which almost always leave an exit hole.
I hear ya, I do the same for the most part. I wish I had a pic of the doe that the shot went in just behind the shoulder and exited right at the last rib. Bullet size hole on BOTH sides. I guess those 3 deer could have just been bad luck or crappy shooting on my part.

Anyways... back on topic. I love my H&R 20ga and they are shooters. I am going to try the hornady SST slugs this weekend. I have read that some H&R shotguns like them.

But I'm told that a metal weighted bar can be removed from the stock to lighten it up??
true, some folks do. Greybeardoutdoors.com has some good info on NEF and H&R shotguns. Here is a direct like to the nef/H&R shotguns NEF/H&R shotguns

I shot another doe this morning on FT Campbell. Double lunged her with a copper solid and she went about 70 yrds. I only found about 40 dime size drops of blood till the last 10 yards and then I got the normal splashes of blood.
I will post pics in 3 days, deer is hanging in the cooler at the game-station till then. The entry and exit holes are dime size at best.

Before you try any other rounds find some Ligthfield Hybred EXP. I've shot basically every single sabot round available through my 20 gauge Ultra Slug Hunter. Most all of them shoot pretty descently but none as tight and consistent as the Lightfield rounds. They're right in the middle as far as velocity and I think that is one thing that makes them shine in this gun. The faster rounds like the Hornady SST just aren't accurate in most of these guns because they're too fast. Some say they skid down the barrel instead of rotating with the riflings. Not sure if that is indeed the case but I can guarantee you they don't shoot as well out of my gun. That being said the SST rounds and Federal with Barnes expanders will flat out put a deer down for the count. Even though they're not as accurate out of my gun!
