I have a four burner gas grill but food cooked on it is not near as good as smoked on charcoal. Is there any way to create smoke in the gas grill?I have apple chips to use if I knew how to make them smoke in the grill!!Any ideas?I could buy a smoker but dont want to get rid of my gas grill since it is in good shape!

I place the chips in a pie tin and set tin and chips directly on the burner shields

Just an FYI, Don't use the wife's good pie tin as it will no longer work for pies. Don't ask how I learned this

Do you soak chips in water before you place them on burner in the pie tin?

As far as I can tell soaking the wood chips just delays the smoke and adds moisture into the mix,I never soak with my electric smoker when using chips.on my big gas smoker I use chunks but its been a few years since I have fired it up,be careful using foil as it can leave some nasty residue, they make a chip holder made of cast iron and a stainless version but most are pretty small the tube holds more

Soaking in water is pointless. All that does is delay the inevitable smoking. Gotta boil all the moisture out before combustion sets in.
