A guy has a Bear Encounter and is asking $300. He says he got it this season it's been shot less than 15 times. Comes with hard case and arrows. Is it worth it?

Not bad, not outstanding. They can be found for about $329-350 brand new on ebay. I'm sure you could find them on sale at Bass pro for close to the same thing just after the season is over.

A hard case, I'm assuming probably a plano or something similar about $30-50.

Arrows- if they are solid will run about $10-15 per arrow.

So that could save you a little money. It all depends on you.

If i were serious about wanting it, i would have him meet me at a solid local archery shop and let them check the bow out for you, make sure it is as new as he say and doesnt have any serious issues.

Whenever you buy something like a bow used, you always assume the risk of not knowing the whole story. He could have dry fired the bow or dropped it from a tree while hunting, you never know. In both cases there may not be visable or noticable damage at first but I sure wouldn't want to be the one drawing back when it did decide to break down due to misuse. You also don't have a factory warranty if something does go wrong with the bow.

sorry for the length but IMO I would just spend the extra $100 or so that you are going to save and buy one NEW from a reputable dealer, if that's the bow you want. JMO

The only problem is I am left handed and it's been hard to find any in stock at local stores and most said they won't get any bows in until close to turkey season and they couldn't guarantee leftys.

I would do my best to test it out in some way before laying out the cash (Buckbuster's shop visit idea would be a nice option), but in general I let my gut feeling about folks dictate my business on stuff like this. I talk to them and size up their mannerisms/habits and decide whether they are a straight shooter or not. I'm no human lie detector, but I am a pretty good judge of character. Most folks that I meet in these types of situations are OK.

A good question to ask (if he didn't already say) is "why are you selling it?"

Sometimes the reason for the sale is what sells me on the purchase (like the guy moving to Montana and selling his truck). If it sounds questionable, he's hiding something.

Its a forum just like this one only much larger. There's a classifieds section that always has solid deals going on with lefty's selling nice setups. You can find anything and everything there. They also have a ratings system similar to ebay where you can tell if a seller is legit or shady. I would reccommend checking there.

Seemed legit when talking to him. He said his grandmother was in bad shape and that they were selling the land he hunts (I guess her land or family land). He offered me a block target for $20 more and I declined because I have Academy gift cards and would pick one up new but the he gave it too me with the bow. Seemed like a straight up deal and a good guy. Now hopefully I'll get some good use out of it.

I posted this thread a little last minute and had already kinda had the deal locked in but not knowing much about bows I wanted to get some opinions before purchasing (we were able to meet sooner than I thought because work said I could leave early if I wanted). Like I said above, seemed like a good honest guy so I believe it was a good deal.

I got ya. Well congrats on the new bow, I hope it works out well for ya and ya get to fling an arrow at a deer before the years up. I wasn't trying to deter you from buying the bow, if he seems like he's on the up and up, then you got a pretty solid deal.

I know you weren't trying to deter me. Probably won't use it this deer season. Was looking for one for next year because I assumed some people may have gotten a new one for Christmas or was just selling their bow now that season is over. May use it during turkey season.
