I don't claim to be Nostradamus, but I usually have a pretty good feel for how the season will go and don't wear too thick of lenses in my red and black colored glasses when I get those feels. But this year is going to be a total crap shoot. Let me (not so) briefly explain my thoughts:
Driving through K-town yesterday, even the heavily orange-biased sports talk shows on the radio (WNML) were far less optimistic about UT's chances this season. New QB who has only been on the roster for a couple of months, depleted offensive line and rb room, etc, were their concerns. They felt that, with UT's tough schedule, 9 wins was a stretch, and a 7 win season was likely… wow! I've NEVER heard them so pessimistic BEFORE the season.
Alabama will be breaking in a new QB, and some of their recent big signings have not panned out the way that they expected. I never count them out, but they may be setting up for a good signing class but even rougher season (by Alabama standards) than last.
You all know that I'm a UGA fan, but I don't have any clue how this retooled roster will work out, especially at the QB position where Gunner Stockton will finally get the reigns… he may be Stetson Bennett 2.0, or Joe Tereshinski 2.0. The receiving corps looks very talented, but can they actually hold onto balls that hit their hands? Can the defense bounce back from a "good but not great" season? Who knows? I truly wouldn't be surprised with them being undefeated or 7-5.
But LSU is actually looking better (I can't stand that coach, but have always respected the program, and Nussmeier is really good), Texas is looking stacked (may actually be BETTER this season despite the draft losses), and even ATM looks serious under their second year coach with the talent that they have.
My point is, the SEC is WIDE OPEN this season in a way that they have not been in some time. And, with the crazy transfer portal and NIL distractions, it feels like all of college football may be ripe for the picking. I think that 3-4 of the usual big dogs will eventually emerge at the top, but the question at this point is "which ones?"
If I were to put all of my eggs in picking 2 teams for the SECCG at this point I think that I'd go with LSU and Texas… but I wouldn't be surprised by a half dozen different teams making it.
If I were to pick a top 4 in college football, it would likely have to include Oregon and OSU, but I also wouldn't be surprised if they weren't there at all.
What say you?
