I just Googled German 88, cause I never heard of it........it is an anti-aircraft gun. I think it is a little overkill for deer.

Yes, this is a joke, but the German 88 was the most infamous gun of WWII. It could poke allied bombers out of the sky over Europe, bust tanks miles away over the desert in North Africa, and was the gun in the large Panzer Tiger tank.

If you really want to get geeky, it's also called FlaK 18, 36 and 37 when it was used in the anti-aircraft role, PaK 43 when used in the anti-tank role and KwK 43 when mounted in an armored vehicle. I KNEW all those models I built growing up would lead to something big one day!

All kidding aside the if the gun is 1897 or older it will require the use of 8mm "J" or "JR" ammo (.318)bore, not the more modern 8mm "JS" (.323) bore ammo that is commonly sold today. The Germans changed the bore specs on the 8mm rifle in 1897 and this is the reason for the two different dimension cartridges.
