...by himself. I heard a single gobble earlier in the morning from a long narrow field and as I was walking there spotted a lone hen heading toward a nesty looking area. I let her pass, eased around, and sure enough he was out there feeding. Setup, tossed out few easy yelps, and he was on the ground at 1220p. For those having trouble fighting hens thus far, it's starting to get right.

Just one more pull of the trigger and that's it for me this spring.

Congrats! The story reads like it was a kamikaze hunt, but the word "early" and then "1220" lead me to believe you stayed with him for 6 hours or so. Is this correct?

I'd been fooling with an ornery field bird that had a dozen or so hens all morning. Twice I had him right on the ragged edge of killing range (prolly could have killed him) but just didn't want to kill him that. He won that round.

While I was firing up the pack of hens so they might come over to beat up the new loudmouthed hussie, another bird gobbled in an adjacent field. Figured I try him later if this one didn't pan out. So you're right...I first heard him hours earlier but the actual hunt for him only lasted 15-20 minutes.
