Was wondering since there are only so many prime spots on any hunting area, who gets the prime hunting spots, and who gets the not so great spots? Hope this don't sound like a stupid question, just curious, as I have never been on a lease.

It depends how rules are written or unwritten. If you are the Johnny come lately, you probably get the gar hole to hunt. Ames rules clearly state that no one has priority over any spot. So it's first come first served and you are only allowed two stands. This makes a level field for all. But I will say experience and familiarity with the land is essential to success. All stands are removed at the end of the season and everyone starts fresh the next year.

We pretty much just text each other and say hey I'm going to this area and the rest of us avoid that area, we all have stands up and there are two community stands.

We have over 4800 acres on our lease and deer have been killed in all areas. We have stands all over it. Our rules are simple. Each hunter can put up one stand marked primary with their name on it. They are the only one who can hunt this stand. All the rest of the stands may be hunted by anyone first come first served. We always try to communicate and tell each other where we plan to hunt. On most deer leases it is not as much of a problem as you might think. You have to remember most hunters still have to work and have family responsibilities and they may not get to hunt much.We have 3 club stands in good areas that are usually killed out of every year. We have most hunters on the weekend, but during the week there may just be 8-9 hunters. After Thanksgiving we may be down to 4-5 hunters in camp. We have someone every year kill their first deer.

When I leased land in Hardeman County everyone had their own stands and we had 14 club tower stands. We had a board set up with the club stands on it and corresponding tags. As the hunters arrived (first come first served) if they hunted out of a club stand they pulled the tag for the stand they were hunting and hung it on the board. If someone was hunting a private stand they weren't allowed to hunt within 250 yards of the tower stand being hunted. Sometimes they were there first and elected to hunt their own stands prior to someone pulling the tags for the club stands. When that happened those hunting the club stands close by just had to hunt with company. Usually this was discussed between hunters before leaving camp and we never really had any problems.

We have 40 food plots with shooting houses & 52 club stands in woods. In the camp house there are two "tag in" boards, one for plots & the other for stands. Everyone has a washer with their name & cell number on it to hang on board. It is first come - first served and pre-tagging is not allowed. You are expected to leave camp & go to stand within an hour of tagging in. For private stands, we have a dry erase board for hunters to write their location. If there is a club stand nearby, they tag it as well. If a tag is still hanging at end of day (or hunt), we know who & where to start looking for them.We have 3300 acres and 14 members, so the above has worked well the past 16 years.

We are first come first serve. To be honest the same 3 guys kill deer every year. The rest on them struggle. Same every year. I just don't let people know where I'm at when I kill. Most won't put forth any effort.

All I know is it is great to hunt with someone you grew up with. Our biggest thing is tell each other to go and hunt the good spots.

The members that WORK on the lease during the summer, have first choice on hunting spots. If all that is equal, then it's first come.

On my lease, you always have first priority on your stands. We do hunt each other's stands and never had a problem. I've got a great bunch of guys and we all work together and help each other out.

I am very fortunate to have a great bunch of guys on my lease. We never have had a problem. We communicate by text if we are not sure what the other is doing or planning to do. If we didn't have such a good bunch, we would have to do things a little more structured.

3500 acres with about 30 stands and plots and 20 members with a few that never hunt. Metal map of property with stands marked hanging in cabin each memeber has a magnet with his member number on it and you just place it in the area you plan on hunting. Member cannot pick a spot to hunt before 5:oo AM of the morning they are hunting. If you have a personnel stand up it will get hunted out of by other members but we usually ask the owner if around if he plans on using it that day. It has worked well for us.

I have a smaller lease with 4 total members we work together and try to be fair. if 2 guys want to hunt the same area, we draw staws. This past year 3 of us killed 3 bucks in 3 days out of the same tree. we work together as a team to do everything we have to do to keep the lease going from plots, hanging stands, cameras, and even getting on deer. the giant leases with a lot of members is not for me as I would hate to put in the time to figure an area out just to show up in the morning and have someones "pin" hung on the area you planned to hunt.

There are 3 other guys on our lease plus our kids hunt some and we have 800+ acres. We are all good friends and share everything including pics and hunting areas. We try to focus on certain bucks and don't care who puts a tag on them. No issues. Prior to this I was on a large lease with lots of guys and people can get funny over "their spot".

Thanks for all the info. Sounds like a small lease with people your acquainted with is the way to go. Still, I don't know if its for me. :)
