Want to spool up some flourocarbon line for a snapper trip.

What flourocarbon line have you had good luck with in the 10-20# range? I prefer lighter line but thought the new stuff might be thinner/better than last time I bought any.

What did you like about it?
What did you not like about it?

Stiffness?
Castability?
Toughness?

been a long time since I bought any.

Forget castability with flourocarbon. I've used all the big names and they all kink, knot, and twist up. Memory is very bad. Line is circled up a day or 2 after you spool it. I've use pline, xps extreme, seaguar (both red label and invis-x), berkley vanish. If there is a better line than these brands that doesn't kink or circle up, I'd like to know what it is as well.

I've tried all brands of flourocarbon and they all suck except for one: Seagar InvisX.

It's all I use. I can cast it, low memory, and knock on wood, I've never had a fish break it.

It's all I buy when using Flouro.....

I've used several different brands & I prefer the Seaguar Invis-x & here's what I do. I run the line through the eyes of the rod & tie it to my reel. I lay my rod down, open the bail, & walk straight away from the rod & unspool all the line. Tie a hook on at the other end of the line & hook it into a tree or something solid. Walk back & get your rod & give a few quick jerks to get the stretch out of the line. Go & take hook off of line & reel onto your reel. It makes the line much more manageable as opposed to Seaguar's Red Label which will jump off the spool & tangle. I also like using the Stren brand for when I am night fishing, it's fluorescent & is fairly manageable if you use the same procedure as I mentioned above.

If your line starts to twist, take your lure or hooks off of your line, put boat in gear & slowly idle forward as you unspool all your line. Once you reach the end, point your rod straight towards the end of your line & reel it in. Without a lure or hook on your line, the line is able to untwist. Hope this helps. Good Luck & God Bless!!

Flourocarbon ain't good for anything except leaders when using braided line. I don't even use the junk for that. All this is my opinion. Some folks like it, but I don't one bit. :)

I do the same whenever I'm in Pensacola except I use monofilament with a 20 pound test Seaguar flourocarbon leader. I can't stand to put the stuff on the reel.

I wasn't fishing for snapper but it worked wonders for specks and redfish around docks coated in barnacles and oysters.

A quick story about fluoro vs mono. A friend & I were fishing Watts Bar. We were both fishing a Shakyhead with a green pumpkin trick worm. He had 8 lb fluoro & I had 12 lb mono. He caught 14 fish & I didn't even have a bite. Switched to fluoro after that trip, been whackin em ever since.

From I what I have heard the majority of the pro bass fishermen use only pure flourocarbon line. I use it for leaders and nothing else.

Exactly. When finesse fishing I get 10x more bites on Flouro than I do Mono. I have no clue why except for the fact that I do catch alot of fish that only pick the bait up and don't necessarily bite it. I can feel those alot easier with Flouro than Mono.

Now Braido is another story. :D

If your fishing slow baits such as a plastic, jig, finessee, etc. Flouro is the way to go. If you are fishing deep cranks, flouro is the way to go.

If your fishing something that doesn't require the line to sink, then I fish the cheap Bas Pro Excel mono everytime.

does flouro sink better than mono?

We are going to be freelining tiny cut bait in a chum line for super wary mangrove snapper. They have eyes like a hawk and can see your line easily and your hook in the bait even better.

If the bait doesn't float naturally they will ignore it. We usually have to go to light line to get the bait to sink naturally and help keep the fish from seeing the line.

If Flouro sinks more naturally, then I can probably move up a line size, get fewer break offs, and more bites.

Cool. Now the tough decision.
Do I put 20# braid on the spool and try to use a 20' flouro leader, OR do I just spool up the flouro?

Have to read up on my braid/flouro knots and see if there is something that will flow through the guides well.

I use P-Line Floroclear or P-Line CX Premium, depending on which is available. But I'm using 4# test for trout fishing. I've never used them for saltwater, I use Spiderwire Fusion. I've only been saltwater fishing twice, so what do I know?

Another great thing about fluoro is it lasts a lot longer than mono. The longer you use it, the more manageable the line becomes. I have better results with fluoro on jerkbaits as well. I prefer the fluoro on jerkbaits because it is a bit stiffer & when I give the pause on a jerkbait, because the line is stiffer the lure will push the line instead of the line going limp & the back treble hooks of your jerkbait grabbing your line as the lure is giving movement after you have jerked it.

Fluoro is a little more difficult to use than fluoro when you first put it on, but after a few weeks of fishing it is just as manageable as mono. The bottom line is, I catch more fish with fluoro.

I decided to go with 30# braid and a long flouro leader.

I like the small diameter and zero stretch of braid. I can pack more on the spool in case I hook a bigger fish and better abrasion resistance if they run me into a rig.

Wrangling a long leader is going to be the challenge with the small guides on that rod.

I use Seaguar InvizX. It's the best flourocarbon line made IMO. I just spool it on and have no worries. I have never had an issue with the line breaking unexpectedly, tangling when casting or retrieving, knots coming untied or breaking, not being able to cast as far or as accurate, or getting kinks in the line.

I put some on an ultralight the other day for trout fishing. Apparently you have to use to so they wont see the line. It worked well for me, with trout that is, but it was like trying to tie a knot in a piece of hair. It was a pain!
