This was my first Deer Rifle. My great grandfather's Savage 99, chambered in 300 Savage. It was his "everything rifle". My grandfather and his brothers all tell me he was a crack-shot with it. It has taken down countless deer, predators, varmints etc...and, I'm told, frightened off some local would-be thieves from time to time. When it was given to me, I felt proud to put meat in my freezer with it. It's still my favorite rifle. What was your first, or favorite old rifle. Share your stories.

Those 110s are good rifles. What makes em special is what you do with them. Make them useful tools. Thanks for sharing!

That's a special rifle you have there that anybody would be proud of having.... that rifle has so much history and it's hard to put a value on it.
I have a Savage 99 in .308 that I actually bought cause my step grandfather had one and I liked it so much I bought one.
I do have a special rifle also that I inherited from my grandmother thats killed a lot of bucks, actually I killed my first blacktail buck with it one morning.
It's a Winchester model 65 in 218 bee.
It's just like this rifle.

Very cool. 300 sav isn't the easiest ammo to find these days...I can't imagine your 218 bee is either:). Do you have any pictures of your Winchester? Savage? Enjoyed your comment.

218 bee ammo isn't impossible to find but I do reload and have all the brass, bullets, powder I need :D

I just looked up that round. It's kind of a precursor to the .223 rem. That sounds like it'd be a lot of fun to shoot.

Awesome rifle and story with it. I wish I had a similar story.

My first rifle was a brand new remington 522 i got for my 10th bday. It was accurate, but wouldn't cycle. Sent it back to remington and they changed some parts and it was better, but not by much and I sold it and moved on.

My first "deer" rifle was a remington 700 7mag that I still use and love, I bought it when I was 13 with birthday and Xmas money and savings.

I do however have a very, very special rifle to me. My grandfather is in poor health, and just recently handed down to me his Remington model 7 243. Along with it came many stories of his adventures with it, including hunts all across the state. It has been rode hard and shows some scars, but is invaluable to me. We are a few years away, but my daughter will carry it in her first hunts.

Great story. I killed my first deer with my father's Remington .243. When I "upgraded" to a scope, I got a 700 in 30-06. I love that rifle too, but it's kinda cool to go out with the little 99, open sights. Seeing the history in those nicks and scratches.

My first deer rifle was a smith and Wesson 1500 7mm mag. I still have it today. I killed several with a winchester 30-30 with iron sights before I got my own rifle.

That's a nice Savage 99 you've got plus it being your great grandfather's makes it even better. If I ever do get a 99, I'd want it to be a 300 also.

My 1st deer rifle was a Savage 340 in 30-30. I got it when I was 16 with money I earned baling hay for a few farms other than our own. I never like the rifle at all but it was all I could afford back then - $60. I only had $58.50 that day and had to beg another $1.50 out of my Mother. :) It was the only rifle in the gun shop that I could come that close to paying for other than a single shot 12 gauge slug gun.

Worked two jobs in HS in the mid 70's to buy a Remington 742 in 30-06.
Never killed a deer with it. I did however outshoot with my iron sights an adult in a competition to see who would "cover Long Bottom" where the deer came out in a big field. The adult had a scoped 30-30.

I sold the rifle in 1980 while in college to help buy an engagement ring. I sill have the wife :)

Win Mod 94 30-30. Traded my first shotgun, a Stevens ss 20 ga with some boot. Still have it, but wish I had placed more importance on keeping the first gun my Dad had gotten for me.

My Great Grandad's Win 94 in 32 Win Special. He bought it in 1927 and hunted in rural PA. Took my 1st deer with it. I had a Sav 99 in .308 with beautiful wood on it, but I sold it to a guy in W TN, he wanted it because his Step Grandfather had one...

My dad gave me his winchester ranger 30-30 when I 13. Still have it and hunt b with it every year. I've killed more deer with it than anything else in my safe.

That's a cool rifle in a great cartridge!

Mine was a remington 700 in 30-06, boring but shoots well.

That Savage 99 is a beauty, finally got my first, second and third kill with it this year. It's my favorite woods rifle from now on. Thanks again.

Something about that design just feels right in your hands. I agree, a perfect woods gun.

Controlled round feed 270
Controlled round feed 270
Controlled round feed 270
Push feed 25-06.....

Just had to be different didn't you!

Actually in those days the Win 70 was probably a push feed too. I dig the truck, my 1st truck was an 86 King Cab 4x4 a lot like it.

So. You''ve been a radical a long time :)
All your brothers shot 270's , you a 25-06. Story behind that?

Ronnie got the Featherweight first as he was oldest,,Daddy got me the 25-06 next and he got Dan and Ben the two 270 Rugers at the same time a couple years latter,,

Never did hear which of you won the shooting competition? I know out of 4 brothers one had to have the bragging rights [emoji1]

Ronnie won that one but over the years it pretty much evened out,,some reason we quit having them about 8-10 years ago,,

was always the w/e before season opened and Daddy would come up with some crazy crap,,one year we had 30 seconds to go hang 100 yard target and back and one shot closest to center won,,I won that,,

Dan won the 2 shot group at 75 yards standing unsuported,,had a couple turkey shoots with BPS 10 gauge at 75 yards with closest to center won which is total luck,,

I won one rested over a fencepost at 175 closest to center and I cut the x out the x ring,,

good times,,
