Went to a different property this morning since I haven't even heard a gobble on my place yet. Had two start gobbling early on the neighboring property and across the road. They've been known to work their way over so I headed that way to find a setup. As I got got there, another bird opened up on top of of the ridge on my side and borders a large pasture. Climbed up the ridge, and worked my way along the edge of field as close as I thought I could. He ended up being roosted about 150 yds into the woods, so I got between him and the field. Got settled down with my 11 year old girl and started calling. He didn't respond too well with my pot call, but LOVED my diaphragm. We talked back and forth for a few, and then I hear one gobble in the field on the other side of the rise. I switched my gun his direction and called and watched for him to pop over. The other bird is still hammering at all my calls, but not the one in the field. Finally I see head come over the rise and I'm right on him...60yds. He stays there and gobbles a few times, and finally comes about 10 yds closer, not over the rise but along it. I switched to the longbeards this year because I knew I was going to be hunting a lot of pastures thus year, so I felt comfortable with a 50yd shot and layer him over. We jumped up and got out to him...JAKE! He never showed me his whole body, so I didn't see his beard. I was disappointed, but it was still a great show. I've had jakes gobble before, but not the way this one did. Ended up hearing 4 other birds on this property, so hopefully I can get back out again.
