Been living on my land in West Cheatham county four years now. I have hunted quite a bit here but mainly hunt my dad's farm in Montgomery county. So Monday morning I left the house about 615. It was still dark. I get to the end of my road at the stop sign. My headlights are shinning out in a hay field. I see this buck walking dead away. I see he is just outside his ears. He was about 75 yards away. I turned left and headed for work. I think to myself that I would probably shoot a buck that size on my own land if given the chance. I thought about that buck all week, since it was the best one I have seen around this area in a few years. I kept thinking he had to have come from my property, given the direction he was headed. Fast forward to this morning. I decided to go hunt the north side of my 46 acres which is 90 hardwoods, because this is where I found a big rub after the season last year, and it's the closest woods to where I saw him on Monday morning.
So I walk out the back door about 6:50. It's already light. I ease along our four wheeler trails and then head towards the area I want to hunt. I jumped a couple deer in thicket. I hear then run and jump and head down into a thick draw but they stop. I need to go another 40 yards to get near some larger timber and to get where I can see past the edge of the thicket. I hear one of deer blow twice. I picked out a big tree to sit down against. I wait about 10 minutes and blow my grunt call 3 times. I wait another 10 minutes and snort wheezed twice with my mouth. In 30 seconds I heard him coming my way. I spot him at 40 or so yards and closing. He stops. No clear shot. He takes two more steps looking dead at me at 25 yards, quartered towards me. I was able to get the gun up when he was closing the distance from 40 to 25. I decided to take the shot. Smoke rolls, I see him headed towards where the other deer had gone earlier. I think I hear him pile up, but I'm not sure. I look towards the direction I shot and see two nicks on a couple of small limbs in front of me. I think, well I missed, or bullet deflected. Scope was clear but bullet path wasn't. 40 minutes passed and I go to where I shot. I see where he turned and ran, but no sign of a hit. Then I spot one drop of dime sized pink blood on a yellow maple leaf. I backed out and eased back to the house. I called my Dad who is an awesome tracker. He taught me, but I am still not as good as he is. He will be 80 on his birthday next month. My mom and dad show up about 930, and we got back out there at 945 and looked for a while and didnt find any more blood. We kept looking as the 3 of us spread out grid searching off the hill towards where I thought I had heard him pile up. Then I hear my dad's distinct whistle. I look over and him and my mom were both pointing. I walked over and we could see him across the small ditch. I feel real blessed to have parents that raised me up to be a hunter. They bought all of my 5 children their lifetime hunting licenses.
After we found my buck, I called the house to tell my wife and kids the good news. My wife said she had said a prayer just hoping we would find it, and my parents would be able to enjoy the experience of my first buck on our property. I thought about getting all the kids out there to help me look, but I didn't think they would have the patience to take a step at a time scanning for blood. I feel real blessed to have taken a nice buck on my own land. Guess I will have to mount it, since it's the first buck from my 46 acres. Sorry for the long story.

Here is what is left of the 250 gr shockwave. He was quartering to. Got one lung, liver, and unfortunately the stomach. It wasn't a good one to field dress, but I have done worse. It was just under the skin on the opposite front edge of the rear ham. I didn't make the best shot choice, but it was the only shot I had. I aimed at the front shoulder, but I think that small limb deflected the shot a bit. But I got him!

Thanks for all the nice comments!
