As many of you know I hate hangin sticks, love a climber and can't sit in a saddle more than 2- 2 1/2 hours. I sold my fourth and last saddle setup, here on TNDeer as a matter of fact. I don't shoot bucks but used this weekend to just sit in a tree and hang under pressure but not really under pressure so to speak. As much as I dislike a saddle, there are a few aspects of saddle hunting that I like. I do like the constant tension on you when you shoot.
A hang on, especially one light enough to actually carry is NOT something I'd sit in all day either. So I have one spot that is pretty much a killing spot. I carried a big heavy comfortable hang on and full length sticks on my ATV a week or so ago and bit the bullet to hang sticks once. I bought an XOP hybrid saddle/harness and attached my Wingman tether. I put a normal tether just below it. During a lull I can turn around and sit and connect the harness to the Wingman and during magic time I can connect my bridge to the tether and sit on the hang on seat backwards and lean back but take a shot off the saddle.
The next day I used my climber and the Wingman tether all the way up and then hung that second tether just below it and did the same. What I like about this hybrid method is I have options for an all day sit. I can resituate after 2- 2 1/2 hours or I could sit in my climber all day as opposed to sitting in a saddle for a couple of hours and then fidgeting and constantly trying to get comfortable every 2 seconds the next 5-6 hours.
The other thing is there is no weak side shot. Strong side on a saddle is the opposite of a strong side from a stand. I have a TON of doe on my property and they were in and out all day and I could seemlessly move from one to the other as opposed to standing there and turning on a tiny platform, putting the bridge over my shoulder like a seatbelt and contorting to take the shot.
I'm attempting to leave the hang on up all season (and not get stolen on my own land) so I can just run in and out with just my bow for shorter hunts and put my climber on my back to go deeper for all day sits. My definition of mobile is probably different than most. Mobile to me is hang and hunt that day and carry it out that night under 30#. My total setup on the climber is 21.6# BUT I'm comfortable all day. Some people's definition of mobile is hang that morning, decide they want to move, take down and go to another tree to rehang.
If I hang a spot in the morning and see nothing, that's too bad for me. I'm not taking all that stuff down and walking another mile to rehang. I'll return to fight another day, LOL!
