fall cleanup has started in my garden. time to pull the weeds that made it thru the straw mulch(mostly dog gone crab grass). the corn is done and didnt do too well due to the dry conditions we had even though i was bottom irrigating a little.(not as much as was needed though but was trying to conserve my well water along with watering my bermuda seed in the back yard). i did harvest enough to finish filling my vegetable freezer. im removing the stalks (plus the other vegetable matter) this year as there is some fungus and mold but i try mow it for the organic matter plus i want a fresh pallete for the barley/winter pea cover crop by labor day.

im still harvesting some descent tomatoes, okra and bell peppers and when those rows are done i will sow a few winter greens. the cayenne and jalepenos didnt do too well in the spot that i planted them this year but picked enough for some candied jalepeno slices and vinegar pickled pepper sauce for turnip greens. canned 10 pints of pickled okra too. ooom ooom good.

My super hot peppers are just coming in now, just starting to get good. Tomatoes still going strong, haven't lost any more to blight in a few weeks. I was gonna mow down the cantaloupe vines, but they started setting more fruit. It will still be a while before I tear everything down. Peppers will go through October most likely, and tomatoes not far behind.

good to hear your tomatoes are doing good, keep an eye out for hornworms. i had a 3 day migraine last week and was in bed and they stripped the top half of my beefmasters.

i think i know why i am having so much trouble with them this year. the neighbors is building a music studio and ampitheater next door on a vacant lot and they installed a utility security light about 100 feet from my garden. my guess is it is attracting the moths.

Nice tomatoes!

I killed 5 darn huge hornworms that tore up my only two tomato plants. They even ate half of all the green Roma tomatoes I had. :bash:

My butternut squash is explosively growing. My long beans and other tropical plants are not producing as much yield this year. Not sure why. No okras and eggplants and zucchini this year, thanks to the groundhog! :bash:

I picked at least a dozen hornworms myself today. And squash bugs are hell bent in wiping me out. Bring on the Sevin!!! Clover cover crop sprouted nicely with almost 4" of rain over the last 3 or 4 days.
