What is a good entry level AR platform rifle? I have been thinking about getting one to plink around with. I have looked at the S&W M&P Sport, Del-Ton, DPMS, one's like that that are under $750. Most of them are under $700. I did find a S&W in a store for $605.

Does anybody have any of those? What would ya'll recommend for an entry level AR for just pidddling around? I've got a Mossberg Tactical .22, and I like the way it feels and looks, so I thought I might step on up to a .223 because of that.

Thanks!

The M&P would get my vote. Don't count out a Rock River Arms either.

The Windham SRC is a very nice AR for $800 at Walmart, it's made by the former Bushmaster owner, factory and techs. I looked at the Colts and I've owned a Colt, but can't see anything that would make it better than the Windham, certainly not $300 better.

Somebody who buys a Ford XLT model doesn't spend their time trying to say it's as good as a King Ranch. There is a purpose and a market for both, but you don't have to compare your choice to anything else. If you're wanting an AR to plink with, you don't need military-grade components. You do not need a dust cover or forward assist for plinking. Just keep it wet and feed it good ammo, and chances are you won't have problems. There is a certain snobbery that exists within a certain AR crowd that I wish did not exist.

No snobbery here, I just know AR's and getting your moneys worth. I have bought, built, and sold a lot of various AR's since 1983. I have also owned 2 Colt M-16's. I liked shooting them all, but for the money I'll buy Colt.

You can get an entry level AR for 600.00, go to upgrade or sale that gun and you will be lucky to get any where near your money back. Buy a used Colt 6920 for a good deal, you wont need to upgrade, and if you ever need to sale it you will get your money back or make a little money. There are plenty of good deals on AR's right now because the market is flooded with them and everybody and his brother is making them now. Like it or not, everyone knows the Colt name and it holds its value.

Oh I didn't mean you at all. While not everyone who owns or recommends a Colt fits that description, there is a large following who do (as frequently seen on M4Carbine.net). A Colt is like a John Deere as far as holding value. They tend to be more stable.

I put together a dpms panther ladt year with magpul goodies from one end to another, vortex red dot, titan sjc comp, bcm mod 4 latch and milspec buffer/tube. Used it primarily for hunting and put down 2 with it. Unfortunately i needed money and its no longer in my possession.

if money is a problem them buy something like a S&W AR sporter or dpms and build from there. you dont need to spend thousands of dollars for something you are gonna have for hunting and home protection or even plinking. competition shooting is a whole nother story. I had maybe $1200 in my dpms and it did its job perfectly fine.

I have a friend who bought a $120.00 lower at a local gunshop in knoxville. This is the part that they consider the "gun" and you have to fill out the paperwork.

Then he ordered a $720.00 rock river brand upper complete with 22" wilson target stainless barrel from joe bobs. The complete upper can be shipped right to your house.

We assembled it in about an hour with no machining or gunsmithing. If you bought this same gun complete it is $1100.00. Shot 1 inch groups at 100 yards. I've never had an AR, but I was amazed at how easy this was, and the amount of savings. Can't imagine why an assembled one costs so much more. Makes no sense. shoots better than some target guns I've got. If I were getting one I would do the same. Too much savings to not build your own
