DP trap bait?

I use Dukes and Bridgars. I also have a cat. Using straight marshmallows for bait and a golf ball on top, I haven't caught the cat "yet".

I was using ground up chocolate waste from a TN candy plant. It was surprisingly effective
 
I soak whole corn in vanilla extract. You could use any flavor you wanted. The rain doesn't bother it and it's easy to clean the trap. NO BS traps for me.

I like this idea! The catfood turns to mush and starts to mold quickly if it gets rained on, then it glues up the trap innards.
 
We use mini marshmallows. They dont make a mess like cat food or fish and work really good. Some times when it slows up we put peanut butter in the trap and around the top.

Just ordered some more traps and got several different baits to try. Never have tried any marketed baits. Think some of the old/wiser coons tend to stay clear of the traps when it's the same bait used over and over and the dumber ones are being caught.

The way a animal gets trap shy, is when they get cat and pull free.. if you haven't lost any, but are not catching much.. you have either knocked the population way down or need to change bait.. I caught one yesterday in a cage trap using a apple for bait

They can get trap shy from either misses, or watching others get caught. Coons aren't dumb and have the capacity to learn. Saw an interesting video of a trapper who baits coons prior to season. When season opens, he will set many traps along one of the trails leading to the feeder. The theory is that he wants to catch ALL the coons using that trail in one or two nights before they figure out what is going on. Then he traps the next trail leading in. Focus on setting as far away from the feeder as you can to start, then work your way back closer as you catch the coons using that runway. The last round of sets are near the feeder.
