Depends on the rut. Their sort term memory is about a half of a second if they're chasing.
Seriously, BSK will likely give the real answer, but I think they go where they're familiar, not where they're safe. Like I said, BSK is the authority on deer behavior/biology.

They generally never forget associations with danger (places, circumstances). Or at least they will change behavior (travel route, actions, associations, etc.) permanently if they encounter something they perceive to be a deadly threat. It's actually the most basic of conditioning: Take Route A. Run into danger along Route A. Take Route B next time. If no danger encountered, keep using Route B.
Not much thought required for those types of behaviors.
