Deer envy

I posted a pic of my first "good" buck kill with a bow a few weeks back. I had some nice comments on it and felt good. Now I'm seeing the "good" bucks some of you others are posting and I think I shot bambi. I may have to change my perception of a "good" buck. You guys are putting down some monsters. I hope I just have a chance to see something like those yet get a shot at and make the shot. Great deer and great stories. Keep them coming

I hear you barking. I always have to mentally prepare myself for deer envy when I pull into Flowers with my little hardwood deer.

Depends on where you are too. A trophy in West or Middle TN on average is not the same as East TN.

You shoot what makes you happy. Don't let others success make you feel any certain way about a deer you are proud of. It is ok to kill a 4pt, 6pt, small 8pt if that's what gets your blood pumping and makes you happy. I have been successful over the years of killing my share of good deer that in no way matches up to some of the monsters on here. I killed them and I am happy. Lots of people look at my deer and say that they have hunted their whole lives and never even seen deer that big. I am blessed and so are you arty:

This X2. Don't worry about what others are doing. There are numerous things that can influence seeing and killing deer like that.

I'm not sAying I'm worried. And I am happy with every hunt even those that don't produce. I was saying more that I thought my deer WAS good. I am just in awe of the huge deer in TN. Really nice. I am not sure what I would do if one of those walked under me with a bow in my hand, except to change my shorts!

Some folks just have better hunting areas that seem to hold the better bucks and some of don't. Just like here in Iowa, people think those big bucks are everywhere, but it takes the right habitat to have those big ones in your area. It's not always about being the best hunter just because you always shoot the big deer because you can be the best there is but if the area doesn't hold those big deer or have them, you aren't going to get one.

A trophy is whatever you want! Never feel bad about what you decide to take its all up to you! I feel like this trophy hunting will be the downfall to our hunting world!

Most people given the chance would choose to kill a giant mature buck.Back in the 70's and early 80's is when people would think anything was a trophy.And that's because it was cause there wasn't many deer to be killed.But kill whatever makes you happy.There are giants all across our state.More in some areas than others.And don't worry about what other people think.

Went back and looked at the deer you killed, bigger than anything I've got on camera. I would love to kill big deer too, some areas are just better than others.

Just a different perspective.... Sometimes seeing what others are killing and particularly from the same general area you hunt doesn't have to be labeled antler envy. It's quite possible a hunter may not be aware of what there might be in his area especially when you're passing on bucks you might typically kill when they're younger. However, if what you're shooting makes you happy then continue on.

I have to remember that I dont have the genetics or deer like that on our place. Just no there. Our deer are smaller and even the nice buck are thin racked with little mass. A nice solid 8 pt is a REALLY nice deer where I am. Every years or so someone kills a nice 10. We manage well and only shoot 8 or better and outside the ears. a trophy all depends on what you got and what your after. The KY deer I grew up hunting dwarf the deer we have now.

Your buck would be a monster on our place.

...and somebody will always be killing a "bigger" deer somewhere else. Everybody has to start somewhere, from spikes, to forkhorns, 6'ers, and on up IMO. Whatever makes me get that feeling when I see him coming thru is usually what gets taken. Never be disappointed with what you take.

I get that way sometimes, but I know that I just don't have the time to put in what it takes to wait out on a big buck. I have only a certain amount of time to put in the stand and need to put as many deer as I can into the freezer. That means not passing on very many deer!
