Cranes on the move

Apparently today was the day to leave Hiwassee Refuge. From 9 til noon we were cutting up a tree from the ice storm and it was constant crane music when the chainsaw wasn't running. All were headed NW with a tailwind. Conservatively I saw 4000 before I quit bothering to look. Only saw one small group after lunch today. Several groups were quite low.

An awesome sight even if ducks didn't show when I could hunt them.

Edit- this happened in Cookeville. Apparently we were on the flyway north.

Seen several groups here in south central KY the times it's been somewhat decent outside the last week. Big groups, small, high & low it's kind of wild.

In Charleston at my dad's place I heard them calling up a storm in the dark on the wing, a couple hours after sundown. Evidently they can fly with just the light from the horizon.
