15-20ft is good, depending on the variety. For Southern Crabapples or Sargent, they can be planted closer if you want them to form a thicket. For Dolgo and Transcendents though I like to space them where they will have room to develop a good crown. As for tube or not, Sargent, Transcendents, and Dolgos seem to do well in tubes. Southern's would be better off caged though in my opinion due to their low spread characteristics. If you tube them, either get vented tubes or drill holes in the tubes you have. This helps cut down on disease in your crabapples.
