Does anyone have any experience with them? The 2 benches in my boat are foam filled and I'm trying to figure out the best way to add seats. I thought about the pedestal base plate also. Could I drill a hole and remove the foam just for the stud and tig weld the base plate? Or go clamp on?

I've used them. I never could get them tight enough that they wouldn't slip when you leaned back in the seat.

Next I tried what you described. The problem I had doing that was getting the base plate firmly attached because aluminum is too soft to hold sheet metal screws (I have no idea how to weld).

My solution was to a build wooden base of plywood topped with a piece of 2 x 12 that I attached the base plate to. I glued and screwed the wood components and they have held for several years now.

This is kind of a confusing description, but give me a day or two and I will post some pix for you.

Put one on my boat. Put it on and cut you a piece of two by four to fit inside the clamp on each side. Put self taping screws in the board with a little RTV It will hold and not slip off.

I put one on the back bench of my boat. I used a 1/2" conduit strap to hold the clamp on the front of the bench. No problems since then.

I did the same thing in my old boat, put one in each corner of the clamp and it was rock solid.

DR, here are some pix to show how I made my seat platforms. Yeh, I'm a redneck engineer. You can see where I got a little carried away with the Gorilla glue.

Sheet metal screws and glue hold the plywood base. Wood screws and glue hold the 2x12 piece. Screws and glue hold the metal base.

I offset the rear seat to the right to make it easier to drive my small outboard. The bow seat is centered. Also both rear and bow bases are placed to the forward edge of the bench seat.

I have two for my jon boat. After nearly falling out backwards a couple times, I went to work trying to figure it out. Long story short, I put one of those thicker rubber kitchen mats (not the memory foam, more like the industrial type) on the seat and clamped over those. The extra grip was perfect. It's not the prettiest thing, but it works.

I've used the clamp on seat base for years. It slides around a bit but in some cases it is an advantage. I have only had it throw me a few times.
