Anybody had any experience in the southern/middle TN area with Chufa? Advice, tips, tricks? I'm getting everything prepped to put it in the ground in a couple weeks (late for turkeys this spring, I know). Any info is much appreciated.

The only place I've had luck is in soils with a higher proportion of sand or loam. I have not had good success in heavy clay soils (which dominates up on the high ground where I want to plant chufa). I have a little left over that I'll trial in several more places but that's probably it for the chufa experiment. I'm am however going to try a little tiny variety of Spanish peanuts this year to see if turkeys like them ok.

I can grow peanuts just fine but a solid stand of chufa has been tough to pull off.

Chufa is tough to grow in Middle Tennesee. It needs sandy and loamy soils. hard clay is tough on it. Also likes poorly drained areas, not swamps, but stuff that stays pretty damp. Anywhere you see just regular yellow or purple nutsedge, chufa will grow there as well.

As with anything, get you a soil test and put out recommended lime and fertilizer. Also, chufa is resistant to many herbicedes and pre-emergents.

I like to spray pendelum on mine right after planting. It supresses many weeds, but does not effect the chufas.
