it was very interesting, sorry no pics as it was not allowed.
didnt know that the secondary dam to the right from the lake side was designed to fail if biblical floods happen at ele. 690ft
highest ever been was 681ft in early 1980s. it was built to prevent water to overflow the spill gates.
dam will be finished in 2016 but will try to fill the lake to normal level by 2015
they do a background check to make sure you paid your fair share of taxes to the dam :D

It was very interesting. Half the tour was about what the problem is with the dam and what they are doing to fix it. The other half was touring the generators, impressive to say the least.

Like shoreman said the second dam has a channel cut out of the top of it. At 690 ft lake elevation the channel will flow water and is designed to erode the top third or so of it within 30 mins creating up to 400K cfs of water drainage to keep the lake from going around and over the main dam and washing parts of it away.

If anyone is interested in going here is the link-

Very cool.
I've been talking about and writing about the dam for years but have never toured it. Shame on me. I need to do that.

you definately have to take a tour gil, lots of interesting stuff that happened before and after the dam was built in the early 1940s and did you know that the trees on the entire shoreline of the lake was trimmed by the c.o.e
the whole place was clean, not a single dust on floor....military style. everything was at its place nice and neat.
they did admit that if the secondary dam overflowed, it would flood big rock market. heck...if that happened the whole state would be too.
30k cfs is the most they can release in order from congress, but in 2010 flood there was a little more then that if i remember right, as its capable to release more
the problem with the dam is not the leak you see seeping out of the side..(that is normal)....but the foundation where the earth part of the dam is, just like wolf creek dam. the cost of rehab of dam is 3x the original cost to build the dam, but its worth it.
just wondering why its taking longer than wolf creek dam which the earth part is prolly 3x bigger
