How do you guys care for your squirrels in the field when you are far from home? Cut them up there? Or ice them till you get home? Is it legal to skin them while on a WMA?

i sharpen a rigid straight stick and run them through a back foot. needs to be around 6-8" long to accomodate 10 squirrels

Back in the day when I squirrel hunted, I would get me some stiff wire and make me a "squirrel pin." The shape was similar to a Baby Pin and I would use the sharp point to push through the squirrel feet and then close it up.

I throw them in the pouch in the back of my vest until I'm done hunting, then skin them and throw them on ice back at the truck. I thinks it's legal to skin them while still on a WMA or else I've been breaking the law.

If I am far away from home, I throw them in a cooler full of ice water until I get home. Skinning is much cleaner when they are soaking wet. It is much easier to me to keep the hair off the meat. Skinning in the field is too distracting for me, plus the blood attracts more skeeters. :)
