I recently bought a Remington model 770 30-06 used. Gonna sight the scope in and after the first shot the bolt would pull up but couldn't get it to pull back at all. Lightly hit it with a mallet hammer and it came back. Pulled bolt completely out and didn't see any burs or anything like that on it so loaded another round and the exact same thing happened. The bolt works nicely without firing it but once you fire it,its getting stuck. This is a first for me. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could possibly be? Shooting Winchester ballistic silver tip ammo150 grain. Thank you in advance

Check the case head of the brass you removed. Look for deep galling and gouging. Look at the primer, does I look flattened ? Compare it to another fired case that was extracted under normal conditions. Try some different brand ammunition. Does the bolt close easy on an unfired round? If so you could have a pressure problem. If the unfired new round is hard to chamber you could have an extractor problem or something worse. If your not sure, take it to a gunsmith or send it back to Remington.

Sounds like the scope base screws/screw is too long protruding through the receiver and binding the bolt. Check that issue- if that's the problem you can shorten the base screws a tad so they won't bind the bolt.

Your brass is expanding beyond "normal" parameters. The problem of a stuck/tight case can be cause by a filthy chamber, Hot hand loads, or wrong powder(see other thread).

Are you seeing smoke on the neck? As 7MM says, you see ANY signs of overpressure (that's what your stuck case is screaming at us really loudly). Flattened primer where the firing pin strike mark has an edge you can feel with your fingernail?

I will assume you have inspected with a decent flashlight the chamber. You see anything besides cold steel? Lots of carbon/sand/weeds/junk? Time for a superclean of the chamber and bore.

After cleaning please get a factory load and see if the problem continues. Only fire one and don't get your cheek next to the stock.

If the problem does continue, you need to see a gunsmith Hopefully it is just dirty-you'll get the same symptoms because of junk in the chamber. You will know soon enough.

Be aware. In SOME instances that stuck case indicates overpressure.

Exercise caution and care.

yes.

It could also be from something as simple as a corroded chamber. Take it to a gunsmith immediately if you are not capable of doing the examination yourself. It may be something simple, but could also be a headspace issue if you bought the gun used and is a ticking timebomb.

could be bad ammo or any thing listed above

You aint lying, I bought some federal fusion 300 wsm ammo and it was so hot it blew the primers out of the brass.

That's when I started handloading

Like the other guys said it could be a pressure problem or a problem with extractor or something. Look on the internet and see if anyone else has had the same problem with a 770. I had a problem with a Mossberg 100 ATR .30-06. It would break extractors(broke 3)really bad. I sent it back to Mossberg twice. The last time it was fixed it got sold quick. No offense but, this is a cheaper model rifle and they sometimes can have problems. Just like the 100 ATR (POS).

Where the firing pin hits it just a small round dent which looks normal to me BUT after inspecting the 2 shot casings,Their is a small dent which almost looks like a crack about an 1/8th of an inch long on both casings.....the "dents" are just below the primer in the narrow area on the casing. After looking in the barrel it isn't super clean and I mean you can see a few small areas that I definitely need to clean. I may just bring it to a gun smith and see if they can fix it. I did find an area on the bolt(hard for me to explain where, wish I knew how to post pictures) that I see has been catching. I will try and explain where, with the bolt out and looking on opposite end of firing pin there is like a "V" notch where I guess the bolt locks in,ok one side of the "v" is straight and the other side is slanted, about where it starts to slant and go down to form the "v" there is notch where I can see its been catching. I'm not sure if this could have anything to do with my problem or not. Any ideas? If I could post a picture to give you guys a better understanding I would but I don't know how to. Should I just take to a gun shop? I definitely handle all firearms with care and especially this one. Thanks for all the help

This may sound like a stupid question and please take no offense but are you sure the shells are 30-06?
I remember a year or so when someone on here accidently chambered the wrong ammo and was having problems.

Get your digital camera. If you only have a smart phone then ignore my instructions. First off, there is a sticky at the top of General threads, go read it.

login to PB with your new ID and password.
take pictures of your rifle. unload from camera to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your name\My Documents\My Pictures
Upload your pics to PB
select a picture by clicking on it, it will get really large.
On right hand side you will see IMG and next to it a box.
CLICK ON THAT BOX
Now come to TNDeer.
Directly above the reply area there is a series of icons. The THIRD from the left says "Enter an Image" when you pass the mouse over it. CLICK ON THAT ICON
put the cursor in the box and paste and hit enter.
Do a preview, you should see your pic.

You should be good now, start posting pics so we can see what you are saying. I is generally okay with picturing in my mind what folks describe but you and me are on different wavelengths at the moment.

Or I usually just copy straight from PB to here Dave. Click on "Share Links" then right click on the last choice(copy image, I think it is) and copy, then come back to tndeer and right click in your message window and paste. Might be the same thing, dunno.

I dunno. Lets see. This pic I just did the PB IMG thing and then pasted direct into this dialog box:

Seems to work fine. I notice the field parameter markers are not present, I like that, a cleaner presentation.

This pic is old way

Just do not understand why I get the markers. Will try again and I edited them out.

So yes, you can simply paste into this dialog box or click on the icon, same thing.

I think you are combining the text code some how.... or you are trying to copy the album and not just the pic. View the pic you are wanting to copy or scroll over it to get the little icon to show up. Then click on share links (depends on your settings). Just right click on the IMG text string box so it copies or right click on it and select copy.... Then paste in your reply dialog box as instructed before.

I don't believe that is related to the extraction issue. How does the bolt handle feel when you open it up? Does it consistently lock in the upward position (that's what that notch does).

It opens and closes nicely when I haven't fired it. Wasnt sure if after I fire it that somehow its getting caught in that little groove and not letting me pull it back or what. Now I cant get that notch out of the "V" to put the bolt back in the gun to make sure its consistently locking in the upward position. Can I put it in a vise or something and pull the rear back and turn it to get it out of the "v" or is their an easier way? Thanks in advance

One other thing,I do know when I took the bolt out that the piece that locks into the "v" notch was not in it. It was caught on that place that's not supposed to be there. So I twisted it on around and it fell into the notch.

You can twist it with your hands to get it back in to the correct position. Wrap up with towels and have at it.

I see zero wrong, sorry. The bolt is not your issue here.

I would bum a different brand 30/06 FACTORY shell from someone first and try that. Just because you used factory Winchester doesn't mean they didn't have an issue with that load from the factory (wrong powder or high powder charge).

If it's supposed to twist back in to place then something is wrong with this bolt. Me and my buddy have tried every way in the world to get it back the way its supposed to be but it aint happening. It is locked and wont budge.
