Found in the flood debris along the Duck river today. Looks old and I am wondering what it is, and maybe if I put new hooks on it, if it might be worth anything. Even if it's worthless it would still be cool to know the brand and name of it. Anyone got any ideas?

I can't ID it, but I have one similar just different colors. I looked all over it and couldn't find any writing. It looks like there may have been something wrote on the belly, but it's wore off.

Baxter yours looks very similar, maybe just a bit stockier but other than that and the different paint, it's pretty much identical. Do you not know what yours is either? Oh and mine has a rattle inside as well.

lol Not a clue. I've had it for years and just have it and a few more old lures snagged into a piece of drift-wood hanging on the wall in what used to be my little "man cave" room that's now storage for my wifes jewelry junk... :D

Oh, no rattler in mine. She's solid

Hmm well I bet it's another model by the same company. Wish mine was in better shape, but it's not bad considering I found it in a pile of flood debris.

i think it is/was made by the same people that made the original jitterbug but i can't remember the name of it.

It is a Hellbender, made by Heddon. Had several back in the 70's & 80's.
Yep...I have a couple in one of my old boxes somewhere.

If I'm not mistaken, Arbogast made one very similar to that called a "water dog".

Thanks all, now should I put some fresh hooks and a spinner blade on it and fish the pond with it? Headed to the pond right now, no time to fix it now, I just wana catch some freakin fish because it's been too long.

That makes sense because the one I've got was either my dad's or uncle's from back when they got into fishing (other than farm ponds) back in the late 70's and early 80's.

Hellbender Polywog. Heddon made them primarily for trolling. Very effective under the right conditions for both bass and walleye.

They actually were originally made by Whopper Stopper Lures in Sherman Texas. Heddon bought them out. They were a hot lure in Texas in the 70's along with the original Bomber and Creme Scoundrel worms. :)

Yes it is a Hellbender and they were very popular in the '70's. I still fish with them along with Bombers and other old lures. Sometimes the fish seem to really like to hit the old lures that no one uses any more. Or it may be that I like to use old lures since I am an old fisherman. :D

Thanks! I was falling all over myself to say that this was a Whopper Stopper, which I owned way back when. But your explanation of the relationship between Whopper Stopper and Heddon identifies it as basically a Hellbender formerly known as Whopper Stopper. lol

Thanks all, cool pic and I saw some Hellbenders at Academy while picking up some random fishing tackle a couple days ago. How do I tell how old mine is... they look the same. Mine looks old because it went through the duck river and the flood for who knows how long.

The really old ones are made of wood. They, as were many of those style lures were modeled after the Go Deeper Crab. Today, a crackle back Go Deeper may be worth a few bucks.

With many old lures, thebox, in good condition, is worth more than the lure.

Well mine is plastic and has a rattle. Probably not more than several years old, but the hooks are rusted off as you can see and the tail spinner is gone. Maybe I will fix it up and take it to that pond...
