Can any one answer a ?? About a 870 pump

Ok , my dad has a older magnum wingmaster 870 , I got the same gun but mines not a magnum , every thing in side looks the same as far as the bolt and such go , so why can't I but a 3 inch magnum barrel on my gun ? I googled this and some said you could others said no , just wondering what y'all would say . I am not thinking of trying it as a do have a mag 870 just curious ..

The barrel will fit but the action won't work with 3" shells. There is not enough travel to eject a fired 3" hull.

Hey guys , just for kicks and giggles , I take the barrel of my 870 mag and stuck it on my 870 wingmaster , I loaded it up with 3 inch shells ,I didn't fire any but the pumped through it just fine , I ain't seeing any reason with a 3 inch barrel you can't shot them in this gun . Some one explain if I am wrong ?

a fired shell will be longer than an unfired one, see if it will eject a fired hull

Your gun has an ejector positioned to eject 2 3/4" shells.

I didn't fire any but the pumped through it just fine

They worked fine because the crimp was not unfolded (as would be the case in a fired shell). 3" shells will not likely cycle, but you're welcome to try. Put a spent 3" shell in the chamber and let us know if it ejects.

Yeah , your right about that , if I shot one in the gun would or could it damage it in any way ? ? That be may main concern ??

I cannot recommend shooting any length of ammunition that is not inscribed into the side of your barrel.

I have a 2 3/4in 870 with a 3in barrel on it. You can shoot a 3in shell through it but you just have to make sure to pump it fast and hard, since the ejection port aint as long. Ain't no difference in a magnum or non magnum Wingmaster receiver other than the length of the ejection port.

Like I infoman jr said I have heard the ejector is in a different location , but from what I see on my wingmaster and express mag , It don't look no different but then again I ain't no gunsmith ,

As long as you're barrel is a 3in it aint gonna hurt nothin. I've killed a bunch of longbeards with my ol 2 3/4in Wingmaster with 3in turkey loads and a 3in barrel on it. Like I said above you just gotta pump em a little faster and harder or the tip of the hull will stick tryin to pop out the port.

Update , I was at my dads over the weekend I laid my 2 3/4 870 wingmaster down beside dads 3 inch 870 wingmaster and his 870 3 inch sportsman , first we compared the bolts , the ejector and extractor are in the same location on all three , 2nd we compared and measured the ejection port and found they was exactly the same on all three , guess the next step is to tare them down and look inside for any diffrances

There won't be any internal differences FWIW. The "magnum" feature is dictated by chamber length. You should be fine with 3". The bolt will lock up on the case rim and all of the pressures generated by a magnum are dispersed within the chamber wall. Fire away.
