Very poor coaching by butch and staff. I mean UT was on the 1 yard line and you throw the football? What the heck why not just keep it simple and hand it to Kelly up the middle or even do a QB sneak? Defense looked better until that last play. Martin and Abernathy let the wide out blow by them!! Why in the heck were we in cover 2 anyways? Speaking of the last play did anyone see that offensive lineman holding Kongbo? Should have been a flag thrown because had he not held Kongbo gets a sack and we go to overtime. I've been one to defend Jones the past few years but this game did it for me. That game shouldn't have been close. Very poor coaching.

Never actually ran a play inside the 1. Martin completely stopped on the route and then Abernathy took a really bad angle when he picked the receiver up. They were in cover 2 because UF was running basically the same play that they beat TN with in 2015 on the 4th and 14. The still image going around of Kongbo being held didnt look as much like a hold in real time.

There were several opportunities for UT to win this game outright but both players and coaches didnt perform to the level to make it happen. John Kelly is my favorite player on this team right now and he was straight face planting gators in the turf. But bless his heart, he couldnt do it all by himself. He also had a penalty that hurt us and also dropped a walk in TD pass inside the 5.

48 hours removed from the negative emotion attached to a horrible loss; I have arrived at what I believe to be absolute truth.

It is time for UT to gently fire Butch Jones. Like tonight. Let Gillespie (his running backs are unquestionably the best sector of this team) finish the season out as an interim head coach and show future recruits that UT wants to win. UT should thank Butch for his recruiting efforts, returning to the program to some level of relevance, and for being a good mentor to his players....but absolutely let him go.

I had a first class seat on the Butch Train until Saturday. I've kept a "wait and see" attitude about him this season. In year five of his tenure, there is simply no viable excuse for losing to Florida the way they did. None. The incredible ignorance of managing the game clock, inexcusably not running John Kelly on 1st and goal, and the last play of the game have sealed the deal for me. And, I didn't arrive at this based on one game. There has been a pattern of him living by the skin of his teeth in games he should be destroying opponents. Or getting beat by bad decisions. Coaching "not to lose" only to end up doing just that.

I believe CBJ is EXCELLENT at pulling programs out of dumpster fire status and creating momentum. He returns fan bases from the dead. He gets fans and players believing they will win. He sets the expectations of wins. He says he's there to win championships. He loads rosters with incredible athletes capable of big plays. The whole state of TN buys in....and we watch him shat the bed by throwing out of the mother humpin shotgun formation SIX TIMES IN A ROW at the goal line....with a brand new quarterback....on the road....in a very hostile stadium....while a kid averaging over 6 yards per carry is uninvolved.

I wish I didn't have to post this. I like him. I wish he were the one, but I sincerely believe we've seen all of which he's capable.

I'll hang up and listen.

Sounds more than fair to me. I just dont think anything happens until the end of the season unless he wets the bed against SC, or UK. If he loses bad to Vandy at home, he will be fired before the night is over with IMO.

Im interested to see what happens really because I get the feeling that Currie will not play around. I also get the feeling that he will try get the best coach possible also. Big money boosters may limit him like they always have but I think he will do his best to get a reputable coach in here.

Good post Andy. I also don't think anything will happen until after the season either. Here's the real dilemma, do we hope for more ineptitude to ensure his leaving or hope for the team to rally around him like they've done previous years?

Hat would be a tough position. If I were a vol fan I would want 6-6 and get him gone. He has built the brand back up but this is his best he can do imo. To many years to still be making the same mistakes.

I wont wish for more losses or chaos amongst the team just to get Butch gone. Thats silly IMO.

I think Currie is a pretty smart guy and has already made some kind of decision on whether or not he is going to keep Butch around. Butch went 9-4 last year and didnt get a contract extension. I think Currie told Butch that 2017 was win the East or git.

Butch has a contract through 2020. He doesn't need an extension.

Why did he fire his manager after he didnt get one?

Getting an extension would have meant more buyout if he was let go early. Didnt happen.

You let Butch go in mid season and you won't get s coach to coach here....

Wont be mid season if at all. Unless he loses to UMASS Sat or gets blown out by UK, SC, or Vandy. The last one not being mid season really.

Yeah I agree he will definitely leave the program in better shape then he found it when he does leave, but I think his reached his peak when it comes to the win-loss record.

if your happy with good recruiting & 7 to 9 wins year after year CBJ is your guy.

I do think his earned the right to atleast coach to the end of the year unless they just completely fall apart.

I picked the vols to go 7-5 at the start of the season I still see them getting that.

This is on Shoop. How do you not drop 4 deep, one or two being WRs. Like someone said rush 3.

I bet Shoop is gone. Brady's a step closer. One Michigander replaced by another. Eventually.

Man, Vols fans. I'm serious. No joking. This is a heartbreaker. Rivalry game and this happens after battling back. I feel bad for the kicker. Butch might be gone after the season, but I think Shoop will be sacrificed.

Kicker(S). Cimaglia missed 2 and then Medley missed one.

The missed FGs everybody wants to bring up. Two of those weren't really missed FGs. More like Hail Marys, something the last play of the game wasn't. 51 and 47 yard FGs are very low % on the college level unless you have an All-American Kicker. Hint, UT doesn't have one since they need two kickers to even make it work or play a game.

The season is still long from over.

UT will be 3-1 after week 4.

God I hope so Umass has not won a game :?

I know it's not likely the vols do anything crazy like go on a three game tare before bama week to get them right back into the mix with the way starters are dropping after every game, & the way the team looks now.

But crazier things happen.

Lane Kiffin back to Tennessee? :)

Lane probably was the best coach out of the last three after Fulmer. The only problem would be that UT would of spent a lot of time on probation during those years.

Something that UT fans have never asked? Was Kiffin asked to leave after one year considering an NCAA investigation into the program and putting his Lexus in a ditch at 3:00 am with another party no mentioned. The last part was a bonus.... :)

They hid Kiffins wrecked Lexus under a car cover at Toyota of Knoxville. That's a fact. Kiffin didn't under stand that Knoxville wasn't L.A. with plenty of stars running around and the coach at UT would be under a microscope. TN fans really don't care much about the Titans since they are the old Oilers and UT is the biggest sporting team in this state, period. Sorry Mudbone, Vandy doesn't count.

Kiffen was the best of the last 3 but you're right, TN would be looking at investigations and possible sanctions, probabtions. No way Knoxville would accept him back. He is disliked with a passion in Vol Nation.

Along with the female student riding shotgun, I'm sure some intoxicating beverages might have been involved.

I just so happened to work on the house that the accident happened nearby, not long after this.

I think that might be part of the problem with coaching. The TN program is under a microscope, not only fans but the media also. The coach has a lot of pressure on them, and that may be the draw back to a prospective coach. Most other programs have other big time sports to focus some of the attention on. Like Florida, not only do you have several big time college programs but also several NFL, MLB, NBA.

Bingo..... Been mentioned before that UT has to be one of the hardest places to coach and recruit for college football. If you don't count Memphis that's on the other border of the state. Tennessee is pretty rural for the most part and any news hits the media. Nothing wrong with that and just the way it is. The head coach at UT is the biggest name in the whole state and that can't be easy. Imagine having a colonoscopy every day. That's what a coach at UT goes through, no joke.

Maybe not right now. But another win over the vols, and why wouldn't they? That would be 4 wins out of the last six games.

Because Vandy's stadium only hold 40,000 and UT's stadium packs a 100,000 every game. Sorry but Vandy will always be the step child no matter how many games they win head to head. To many people already own the clay orange.... :)

Vanderbilt right now has only given up 13pts this season, has the #1 total defense, #1 scoring defense, #1 in pass defense, #1 3rd down defense, and are top 2-5 in most other defensive categories. And the qb has a really good accurate arm and high qb rating. Only lacking a run game which I dont see lasting.

If the vols don't start winning some division championships, keep losing to vandy, and Lyle is still on the sidelines, I don't think that place would stay filled with 100k people. If it was I wouldn't want to be there. They'd probly be dangerously mad. Lol
Lots of nashvilliNs may stRt opting to watch a gAme closer to home to watch a team win, than travel to Knoxville to watch
Coach botch coach his team out of another game.
^(that was sarcasm) but vandy can become the best college football team in the state if they continue to improve across the board like they have the past three seasons.

Edit: Omg what if vandy beats Bama!!!! Lol
I know it won't ever happen but it would be absolutely nuts!!
Things ALMOST as crazy have happened.

All great stats but at the end of the day, they are still Vandy. I hope they do well but go to a packed house at Vandy and a 3/4 capacity at Neyland- NO comparison.....

Ignorance of the situation. A run play was called, Dormady audibled out of run to a pass play.

And Dormandy made the right check off because UF had 9 in the box and man to man coverage on the outside WR. Up to that point in the game, UF stuffed UT on a couple of 3 down and short hand- offs to Kelly. Also UT had a big play early in the game with a 50/50 ball that UT/Callaway won. Fans have to realize that coaches and players can't predict the future. They have to call plays on what has happen previously.

Even great calls don't work because you have to have 11 guys executing the play.

And there you see some want to fire Butch for no reason other than pointing a finger.

I don't think it was this particular series that is the main cause for the outcry of Butch's firing. I had no problem with them throwing the ball on that play, sometimes you want to run a particular play but if the D doesn't give it to you then you go to the next high percentage play, fade to the corner of endzone with your big man.

What has caused the undoing of butch followers is just the 5 years of incompetence on game days plus the ill preparations on game week. It shouldn't take our team 2 or 3 quarters to get going and figure things out. What is it Butch calls it, team resilience..no it's just that after 3 quarters our team finally catches on to what they need to be doing to win the game.

Butch is a good recruiter, I had big question marks after the horrible losses to OK, FLA and others 3 years ago. It was clearly evident that Butch was in over his head, I said then since he is building the team and recruiting good we needed to give him a chance to learn on the job and get his inefficiencies worked out. Well, he hasn't learned anything and he is still making same dumb mistakes. I guess he is to hard headed to realize he wasn't the best coach in the country and he had areas him and his staff needed to improve. I guess he isn't changing his charts anytime soon.

Year 5 and you still haven't figured things out....it's time to go. I would be saying this if we had won that game Saturday in OT. The product on the field isn't nowhere close to matching it's potential.
