Bur oak acorns

As far as I know, I don't have any bur oaks on my property. Walking across the Vanderbilt campus this morning I picked up a couple of handfuls of bur oak acorns the squirrels hadn't managed to scarf down yet. I will pot them up and hopefully have some saplings to plant in some relatively open spots in my woods (I think I remember that they like a more open, savana-like environment) in a couple of years. I will never live long enough to see an acorn crop from them, but maybe my daughter will walk up on them in 25 years or so and wonder how a small grove of bur oaks came to be! They are some pretty impressive acorns - that is a quarter in between them to give you a size scale:

I just checked out a few bur oaks this morning where I was deer hunting. They aren't dropping yet except for the bits and pieces that squirrels have dropped. I'm wondering if the deer will be feeding on em much when they do start dropping.

Being a white oak, I would think the deer would be on them pretty good once they start falling.

I'm counting on deer eating them as I planted 10 Burs three years ago along with a bunch of other oak and fruit trees.

I picked these up today. I broke one open and tasted it, and it's like a chinkapin, not bitter at all. I found good deer sign under one

the insides were fresh. I guess they turn that color when ripe. last year's nuts were already rotten early this summer.
