I have been working up a new load for my 338 lapua. I switched over to a berger hybrid tactical 250 gr and when I seat the bullet 0.001 off the lands it will not fit into the magazine. For me to be able to fit them into the mag I am gonna have to seat them 0.125" of the lands. How much jump is too much? right now it is shooting very well at 100 yds I have not got to try it further out yet but I am gonna shoot it a 4, 5 and 600 today. 5 shots 100yd. And of course shot number 5 was the flyer.

Re: Bullet length.

Looks good to me. Are the hybrids the same as the Classic Hunter? Think they're designed to be more forgiving in the distance to jump due to the hybrid design of the ogive. I couldn't get the vld's to shoot well in my 7mm mag, maybe due to twist and/or distance to lands too far so they'd fit in my mag. So I switched to the 168 classic hunters. So far I like them, but still dialing in my best load.

Re: Bullet length.

My Browning A-Bolt in 300 Win Mag with 180 grain Partitions is loaded with one in the chamber and one on top of the magazine.

I only care about accuracy and FPS.

Re: Bullet length.

the Berger OTM`s are very jump tolerant ,,start at mag length and work back .010 at a time and you will see a trend in where it likes to be and then you can fine tune .005 both sides of what looked the best,,I have worked on loads for Daddys Sako TRG42 338 and it shoots just as good .200 off as it does .010 jammed,,

the only downside to seating those big bullets shorter is they eat powder space and you might not be able to use as hot a load,,but dont let the jump thing worry you as you will find a good tune with a jump,,the 250 Scenar is a really good jump bullet also,,I even got really good accuracy with the Hornady and Sierra bullets also,,

past 1,500 yards the 300 gr Berger OTM at 2750 will really show its heels to the 250s,but inside 1500 the 250s are gonna be hard to beat,,

Thanks for the Info. I'll load some at mag length and try them out. I hate to be so one sided but so far bergers have out preformed everything else like crazy. Especially 500yd to 800yds

Re: Bullet length.

Above was good advice. I load VLDs in a 7mm-08 and a Creedmoor, and they tolerate moderate jumps well if you work a bit with the powders and charges. The opinions that VLDs won't tolerate jump is mostly a false rumor.
