Does anyone know if wheel weights contain too much tin to be used as properly expanding cast bullets? This thought just came to me, as I was thinking of a deer I killed two years ago with some bullets I cast with wheel weight lead. I shot him quartering to, and hit him good in the shoulder, but had to shoot him again as he would keep getting up, not looking like death, but just hurt. I was wondering if the bullets I cast had maybe exploded even. Thoughts or any experience maybe?

pretty sure WW's are to hard for the ML.. I always used xray lead that was said to be 99% pure when I did my ML boolit casting..

I've heard several folks say they have used them, but that was my first experience actually shooting a deer with the ones that I cast myself. I've gone back to some factory 260 gr lead boolits since, that I've had good success with killing deer in the past, but still want to cast my own. I've also heard that sinker lead is good as well, and its more maleable than ww lead for sure.

I doubt if the boolit you shot the deer with exploded. WW is harder than pure lead and will expand but, not as well as pure lead. A lot of reloaders use it to cast with(me included)but its way better at higher velocities and where penetration is needed.

Wheel w will work. I was always told if they are hard to push down your barrel (really take some effort) they are too hard.

No worries on that Matador, they're saboted. ;) I made my own mold, and they shoot fine as far as I can tell, out to 100 yds anyway, but that's all I'm interested in anyway. :)

You made your own mold? What kind of meplat do you have on that boolit? A fairly wide nose would work good and wouldn't have to expand a lot. You never did say what caliber the boolits are. Sorry for all the questions.

I'm fortunate to be able to program cnc machinery with cam software, so I designed a mold based off of my factory 260 gr lead boolits that I had from Knight(Hornady I believe), and machined it myself. A little shrink factor for the lead and it came out perfectly, matching the factory boolits in size to less than .001" .

Ok. Sounds like a great mold. I didn't know if you milled it on a manual mill or what. I've got some machinist experience but, the company I work for now don't have CNC equipment but, they will probably change.
